Sorry, I’m not too familiar with synths without patch storage. And most of my synths are polys. I guess I just like the ability to play chords on my synths. That’s why I often sample my monophonic synths, especially those without patch storage.

Before I sold my original Sequential Pro One keyboard a couple of years ago for a hefty profit I used to sample the shit out of that synth. I almost never used it “live” while writing songs because it didn’t have MIDI to allow me to trigger monophonic sequences on it while twirling the knobs for more expressive parts.

Anyway, what is the VCS? Is it another proposed Behringer clone or an original synth made by another company?

Again, sorry for my ignorance. My synth journey began with a Juno 60 back in 1982 (or 1983?) and it’s been one poly synth with patch storage ever since.

Oh yeah, I’ve seen that. It looks and sounds more like a mad scientist’s lab equipment than a traditional synth. LOL. But you can DEFINITELY get some unusual sounds out of it.

I wonder what form factor a Behringer clone will take. I can’t imagine them recreating the original design and layout.

Another Behringer clone I would love to have is the MonoPoly. A band mate of mine back in the 80s had an original Korg Mono/Poly and he was an absolute master of that synth. He could program entirely new patches on it in seconds between songs. I used to love playing around with it during our rehearsals. The cross-mod on that synth sounds insane. And having four oscillators means you can create some truly massive lead sounds.

But I would probably have to get rid of my DSI Mono Evolver Keyboard to make room for a Behringer MonoPoly keyboard. And I wouldn’t want to do that. I know the Evolver is a polarizing synth. But I think it can sound great if you dial back some of the over the top gnarly digital distortion.

Behringer announced plans for a vcs3 clone a long time ago and it looks like they were going to be faithful to the original design (pin matrix). But of course, their version will be affordable unlike others.

I believe you are thinking of Depeche Mode’s second album, A Broken Frame, which was done almost entirely using Daniel Miller’s ARP 2600 and Martin Gore’s newly acquired PPG. The PPG is used prominently on every song on that record, especially on the hit single “See You” on which the PPG “choir” sound was used throughout the song.

I believe by the time the band got to Black Celebration they were using samplers almost exclusively with Alan Wilder doing almost all of the sound design and most of the production and arrangements. That’s when Depeche Mode’s songs and sounds became a lot darker. That was the turning point for the band that made them the superstars they are to this day. There wouldn’t have been a Violator without the sample heavy production on Black Celebration and even its predecessor “Some Great Reward.”

Yeah, I don’t think the PPG was used at all on Black Celebration. There are none of those chiming PPG bell-like sounds that were all over the “A Broken Frame” album.

If you watch any of the old live concert footage from the Black Celebration period, all the band members were using Emulators on stage.

it can get a bit "out there" but they have also been used in a more regular, mono sequenced type way, so do have a decent range of use imo.

from the first mockup behringer did, they do seem to be going for the look of it too.

would for sure suit your requirements for unusual sound design too
