So, here is another question /survey.
Do you think that digital effects ala Magneto, Morphagene, Nebulae, Mimeophon are worth it at 500 euro a pop for a singular digital effect (and also the HP adds up quite heavily)
I notice i add a lot of filters in my rack. My reasoning is that they are often the major defining element in the sound of a (subtractive) synth. My major gripe with ready made synths is that they typically only have one filter and if you want another flavor you have the buy another synth, eating up money and maybe more annoyingly space.
(I always liked the pro 3, and being the exception in having 3 filters on board is the main reason).
Now in eurorack we get the get a lot of filters in their analog glory. And they are often quite affordable.
As for these digital effects? They are often variations of sorts in delays/reverbs (ohh blasphemy
) and i find i m having a hard time justifying it. The FX aid has similar stuff on board: approximations of Magneto, Big Sky, Black hole and then some, like approximations of specific guitar pedals. ....

don't know the strymon personally, well, no experience with it.
the other 3 i have, of those only mimeophon is a single straightforward delay.
morphagene is a tape deck, with sound on sound recording, granular sampler. good for glitchy stuff or breaks.
nebulae is all kinds of things, check the homepage, many examples of synths and samplers to update the firmware with, however the onboard firmware at purchase is a damn fine granular synth.
whether these are worth it to you, if you use fx in a more standard, set and forget while you play the synth, probably better to go small and not worry about modulation or hands on tweaking.
if you play the fx as much as the synth, you will want more space and controls.
size wise, if you are dead set on staying small, it's going to be tough to get more than one on the rack, so that may also factor in for you.

I have effects as a line in the sand I refuse to cross, I will do them in the box, far cheaper with loads more choice and so much easier to configure for buses for things like sidechains. The ‘hands on’ arguments are null and void for me as I have a 16n Faderbank I picked up for under £200 that lets me use 16 faders to control MIDI CC’s on the effects. Can even fake things like a Morphagene using VCV Rack modules.
I have a handful of guitar pedals and 19” rack effects though and external hardware instruments that can be used as effects boxes (NTS-1/MS-20/Typhon) which I use with my DAW via my RME hardware interface. They are cheaper, have better hands on controls and utility than most eurorack modules plus don’t take up rack space.

The line between "effects" and sound sources, or modules that enable more synthesis techniques, is blurry. Mimeophon for instance can have delay times short enough to be audio rate and it sounds lovely as a resonator. Even when used as a basic delay though, it has a character and feel I really like, and despite all the great delay plugins I use regularly, I would miss Mimeophon if it were gone.Stefken wrote: Tue Jul 11, 2023 12:17 pm Do you think that digital effects ala Magneto, Morphagene, Nebulae, Mimeophon are worth it at 500 euro a pop for a singular digital effect (and also the HP adds up quite heavily)
To me it makes just as much sense to have these in the rack as it does a filter, oscillator or modulation source. But it would make less sense for effects that you only intend to use in an end-of-chain way, so I don't tend toward reverbs in the rack (except the built-in reverb that Mimeophon and Beads can do, or psuedo-reverb created by diffuse delays/granulizing).
That was why I let go of my FX Aid. It had some well-done algorithms, but since it didn't really specialize in anything, I felt like I might as well use plugins.Stefken wrote: Tue Jul 11, 2023 12:17 pm The FX aid has similar stuff on board: approximations of Magneto, Big Sky, Black hole and then some, like approximations of specific guitar pedals. ....

I will add that this goes back to modular being a very personal thing. As much as anyone can get excited about how great something is, someone else will find it not worth purchasing.
Mimeophon, as among the first modular purchases was probably the one I had to take a leap of faith with, only because I have so many software delays and reverb… but now that I have it, I don’t use it as a set it and forget it module. It’s every bit apart of the sound, or sounds when multiple parameters are sequenced, as anything else.

I think a lot of it is down to what you already have. I owned shit loads of effects plugins before getting into modular so it didn't make sense to me to throw the baby out with the bathwater, but if you don't and have loads of rack space and a bigger wallet than me then rack effects may make more sense. I do also take on board resale value as an argument. I'd find it much harder to sell on plugins I own than I would a hardware module.
