Yes, thank you. That's typically what I read when uploading a cover song. I've never before this incident had them take it down and give me a strike against my account. And yeah, it was for a Don Henley cover.
Yip. Apparently the Eagles are super aggressive when it comes to their music on Youtube. I remember Ric Beato doing a video about it.
Edit: He might talk about it here.
Hmm...I remember there being a lot of media stories relating to the ridiculous litigious nature of their break-up way back when. So, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. But man, the song was "The Heart of the Matter," which is about "forgiveness." :ud:

You would think there would be a little more latitude with that one. :D

I don't know if it changes and I think some artists are really aggressive because I remember years ago someone complaining they yanked a guitar tutorial because the guy played a famous riff and he thought he was doing the right thing by using only a couple of seconds of it, but they still took it down. I thought he was in the right though because isn't there a 20/30 second rule that you can use so much of a song before you have to get permission or pay a royalty? U don't see how it would be a problem with how many 'American Idol' wannabees posting their torturous covers online.

There isn't such a rule indeed.
We are the KVR collective. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. Image

Yup, this is exactly(!) what happened to me, and it was also, yup, UMG. However, and he may have missed it, there is an option to see who made the claim, and it gave me a umusic email address, so I contacted them. I haven't heard back (and I doubt I will), but eh...

I'm wondering if I should just not cover anymore songs. I figured these artists and publishers would appreciate it, since they get the money without having to do any of the work. Don't really get it. But I am very relieved to have watched this video and see someone reasonable also upset by this.

Thank you for the link.

Not true. Maybe even a bad idea as even a small channel is apt to get take down notices from certain publishers if you make it that easy.

I have been doing this for years. Straight up covers that sound nearly identical to extreme interpretations that never even got claimed. A few years ago there was even a third party....We Are The Hits that would actually claim it for you then split the money with the actual copyright holder. Not sure if they are still around.

I know no one asked but in my opinion the money should be shared. In most cases I would rather see a cover and these folk put alot of effort into it and it is pure passive income for the original publisher. Kinda like a mechanical licencse to cover a tune in audio. Alot are cheap if not free. The real bitch is that when video is involved it becomes a sync licence and most of the old school publishhers were never set up for it. So it is nearly imposible to get a sync license from them because they dont have the admin for it. For now it is really free money to them until it aint.

For those morons managing The Eagles, G n R ,ACDC etc......your music will die a reasonably quick death if you continue to aggressively take down cover vids.

I do like the idea of including that info as well as pointing folk to the original. But dont belive it helps your case.
How do you advise I should proceed in the future? And are there any telltale signs to suggest a artist/publisher does not allow their content to be covered when you upload a cover to YouTube? Honestly, I only have a handful of subs, so I wouldn't get any money right now anyway. So, I don't care how much of the advertising income they take.
I would continue to post your content. If you are good and interesting your channel will grow. At some point you will have value to command sponsors. Dont worry about Yt monitization those numbers are falling everyday in order to maintain share holder position near pandemic levels. Most of all have fun.

No real tell yale signs that I know of. One way is if you want to do a cover.....see if others exist.....if not there is probably a reason.

Good advice. I think the only other thing I have to go on in terms of covers is when I upload the actual video to YT and it does its checking process. I guess if it tells me copyright claim, but holder allows material to be used, I'm good to go. Of course, if it don't, that means all that effort was for naught.

Kinda blows. 'Cause yeah, I'm just doing this for my own enjoyment right now.

Thanks, folks.

Not necessarily true. If you read the fine print it basically says there maybe further issues in the future and that the initial upload check may be augmented by anyone at anytime it seems. Hit or miss really but I think most publishers appreciate the extra income and are happy to allow covers.

:(

True.

Think I might just be better off not doing covers at all anymore.

Thank you again, folks.
