a new soft synth, the third, by Physical Audio;
"Modus uses our latest research in collision modelling to connect acoustic elements together. Strings, plates, springs and rattles collide, literally, in algorithmic air to generate tones that resonate and react just like they would outside the virtual realm. These elements are combined in different ways to create three types of instruments;
1. Connected Strings
Each voice has up to four connected strings which can be plucked or act as resonators. The strings are connected by either rattles that give collision effects as the strings vibrate, or nonlinear springs. Physical parameters control the decay, mass and harmonic content along with individual semitone and fine tuning controls.
2. Strings connected to a Plate
This model has two strings connected to a plate using nonlinear connections that can either be rattles or springs. These strings are retuned on-the-fly to give 6 octaves of monophonic or duophonic sound. The plate can act as a soundboard by varying its decay, mass and fundamental frequency. These, along with the connection controls, can all be changed in real-time.
3. Driven Plates
A driver signal is used to excite the top plate, which is connected to the bottom plate with two nonlinear connections. This driver can be a polyphonic sawtooth or sine wave, or a multi-striking hit for percussive effects. There is also an option to use a single plate connected to ground."

Modus will be released at july 11th, at an intro price of: €72,60 / $69

I wonder how much CPU it uses compared to Chromaphone 3 (which I won in a Plugin Boutique IG giveaway 2 years ago!).

MPE integrations is perfunctory here, quite bad. Can't adjust the Pitchbend range on the synth, when adjusting it to the range of the quick start guide, it slides to the wrong note. There are so many of those badly implemented MPE plugins. I'd rather they forgo on the effort if it so low. Frustrating.
Seems more efficient that Chromaphone 3.

I’m really liking this. It has a wide sound palette. Adjusting the connection strength whilst playing really gives you the feeling of using a real instrument, it brings it to life.

It seems to depend on the range. Notes in the lower register are more CPU-intensive. I suppose this is why polyphony was restricted to 4 notes in the strings setting, and to 2 notes in the strings-plate.Korg Supporter wrote: Tue Jul 11, 2023 2:51 pm I wonder how much CPU it uses compared to Chromaphone 3 (which I won in a Plugin Boutique IG giveaway 2 years ago!).

you can't really compare Modus to Chromaphone, indeed Modus is kind of a specialized soft synth, the materials, how they are connected (and how you can change the connection), the way you can program collisions, etc.JerGoertz wrote: Wed Jul 12, 2023 9:04 am The presets all seemed kind of same-y to me. Hopefully this can be overcome by rolling your own.
For now, think I'll stick with Chromaphone.
still i managed quite a bandwidth of presets, different sounding. also the playing style is important.
but still; it are plates, strings, rattles. they are driven by plucks or drives. you can change how.. also you can drive them by a saw or sinus wave. which gives also great result.
but of course it can't be to your liking.
doesn't work for you music style, etc.
it is really worth a demo. Physical Audio has its own approach, which you like or not.
i like it... but that's me.

I agree that Modus and Cromaphone are essentially different instruments, both of which I like for different reasons. Modus is an incredibly alive instrument, very organic, weird, perhaps “limited” in some sense but at the same time deep in terms of user-instrument interaction. The good thing is, it requires a little tinkering to be played, you kind of have to train yourself to discover all the ins and outs. It makes the learning process fun.WasteLand wrote: Wed Jul 12, 2023 9:23 amyou can't really compare Modus to Chromaphone, indeed Modus is kind of a specialized soft synth, the materials, how they are connected (and how you can change the connection), the way you can program collisions, etc.JerGoertz wrote: Wed Jul 12, 2023 9:04 am The presets all seemed kind of same-y to me. made a small showcase with presets that i made myself. it still a special instrument, or special 3 instruments you can choose, that you can play. as stated before. but that is special... still in my view an unique synth, that of course will not be for everybody's taste.
i do own the other plugins of Physical Audio, also Chromaphone 3, Rhizomatic Plasmonic, Reason Studios Objekt & Friktion,
MSoundFactory (great for physical modelling and many other things..), perhaps i forget 1 or 2?
well...
as always; personal tast, style of music, etc.

and is great that Physical Modelling, with different approaches, that we have a lot more, nowaday...
