For now, think I'll stick with Chromaphone.
you can't really compare Modus to Chromaphone, indeed Modus is kind of a specialized soft synth, the materials, how they are connected (and how you can change the connection), the way you can program collisions, etc.

still i managed quite a bandwidth of presets, different sounding. also the playing style is important.

but still; it are plates, strings, rattles. they are driven by plucks or drives. you can change how.. also you can drive them by a saw or sinus wave. which gives also great result.

but of course it can't be to your liking.

doesn't work for you music style, etc.

it is really worth a demo. Physical Audio has its own approach, which you like or not.

i like it... but that's me.
I agree that Modus and Cromaphone are essentially different instruments, both of which I like for different reasons. Modus is an incredibly alive instrument, very organic, weird, perhaps “limited” in some sense but at the same time deep in terms of user-instrument interaction. The good thing is, it requires a little tinkering to be played, you kind of have to train yourself to discover all the ins and outs. It makes the learning process fun.
I find Chromaphone more accurate and predictable but as a result a bit more clinical.

Modus is less predictable and more "organic" sounding.

Both have their place and both are great.

The one criticism I'd have with Modus is that the presets don't really show off its range.

Can't adjust the Pitchbend range on the synth, when adjusting it to the range of the quick start guide, it slides to the wrong note. There are so many of those badly implemented MPE plugins. I'd rather they forgo on the effort if it so low. Frustrating.

Seems more efficient that Chromaphone 3.
I’ve not tried it yet, but I know a lot of plugins use different pitch range standards. Can’t we all just agree that the range is +- whatever the number is?

I made a bunch of my own patches but I can't find where it saved them to - anyone know?

click on info

on the bottom, in Windows, you see the path to the presets. i assume also on mac.

Great thanks found them - OK so here is a NKS template for Komplete Kontrol and all patches saved as NKS with tagging and previews and a bonus set of 10 patches (in 2 banks - 'Natural Acoustic' and 'Hybrid Acoustic')

I had to get it, and its great. Very different to any other PM synth, but the sounds are great. Playing them expressively in MPE opens up a new world.

Well, it sets the range to the standard 48, that is what I usually want. I don‘t have to do anything more than just switching on MPE mode. An extra plus is, that this is not saved with the presets. Others don‘t get it, that this has to be global…
Most other MPE synths are way more „perfunctory“.
I disagree to the quoted statement, but didn‘t dive into creating sounds with it yet. The presets already make me happy…

How would Modus compare with Derailer In terms of potential/quality/complexity?

I would say that Modus is much more musical. Not necessarily an expanded version of Derailer, which has features not included in Modus (the bowing for instance). You will still get a lot of crazy sounds out of Modus, but it seems to allow a lot more musical exploration.

I've the same quandary - I have Preparation and the overlap with Modus and Derailer makes me wonder why they're not just one VSTi and which one has what sub-feature of plucked/string physmod that makes one more favourable over the other ...
