Yes, but they may need to take that "up a gear" now... it will be interesting to see.AD80 wrote:I think Roland has a better relationship with Cakewalk than Emagic.Sascha Franck wrote:Now, could Roland snag Emagic off Apple's hands as well, please?
The trend though is for the big hardware companies to acquire the software companies with a view to making their hardware more attractive (as Apple, Avid and to some extent Sony have done). So I suspect that the big deal here is to try and make mLan etc universal standards, rather than to improve Cubase so much.
I think that Yamaha, not Steinberg, are the winners here, but time will tell.

It will also be interesting to see what this does for the XG format.
I own a Yamaha PSR 2100, one of their semi-pro arranger keyboards. Quite apart from the fact that I'm a keyboard teacher, I find this instrument a very useful bit of kit for my own music making. Excellent sounds, etc.
While I don't like Cubase much (abandoned it a few years ago, in fact) I can see that it would be attractive to own a software sequencer that fully recognised XG and had an XG synth VST (kind of like the GM2 sound module Cakewalk/Roland have done with TTS-1 in Sonar 4).
In the ongoing battle between Roland/Yamaha over GM2 vs. XG, this could be a killer move for Yamaha, and I fear that the big "losers" here could very well be Roland/Cakewalk.
Also I feel that market dominance by one corporation is generally a BAD thing, in spite of the benefits in terms of compatibility. Where does all this leave Ableton, Propellerheads, etc?

I don't know about any tech that they got from Steinberg, but the "13 million euros" worth of sales* + the increasing value of the company could count for something.AD80 wrote: I wonder if Pinnacle got their money's worth. I didnt really see any difference as far as new hardware etc.
Has anyone seen the actual selling price for the company this time? I remember last time it was around ~$24 million.
*= I assume they were profitable.

The psychic swami looks into the crystal ball and sees ...
Korg buys Fruity!
You think I'm joking, but I'm not.
Korg has to play catch up with Roland and Yamaha. Korg likes dance-oriented things. Fruity is something you can dance to. So go for it, Korg!

Admittedly, Korg and Fruity are some of my favorite companies. They are quirky and fun, so they might get along. Japan is the Belgium of the Far East, or somethign like that. Anyway, you heard it first here.

bah globalization !!!
Think about employees and their family.
I'm a programmer... and in the last 10 years I had to change company every 2-3 years due to company buyed from a bigger one. They always promise improvements... but what you see is only cutting on costs and employees to have "efficiency". A lot of employees forced to change city, leaving friends and parents...
Sometimes think about that...
