You saw my screen shot of the RC JP-8? Can you do a screen shot of yours where the tempo slider is?

yes both go into my Lynx Hilo audio interface before hitting my Event Opals.
I don't have an analog mixer anymore

The old version has it, the new v2, doesn't so don't overwrite the old version... :ud:

Ahhh.. that is why I couldn't find it.. I had tried version 1, about two or so years ago and didn't much like it, so uninstalled it, then tried v2 (which as you show doesn't have it).. odd thing to leave out.
Even if I did, on mac I am not sure how to prevent it from overwriting and cubase seeing them both.
And oh when you do put up hardware vs tal j-8 if you can please NOT tell us which is which initially, will make it more interesting to me anyway.

Ok here it is

I'll let you guess which is which for now :)

Even with a relatively simple single oscillator sawtooth Arpeggiator sound, they don't sound anything alike.....
Really surprised me as when playing them I didn't think they were this different until I tried to match them to the real thing

Any difference in the Arpeggiator pattern is down to the synths, as I used their onboard ones

Yes, very different. Still, as soon as you release the results, I know which one I'm buying.

1. Sounds the best to me. Going to guess hardware. Wishing it's the TAL. :)
2. This one sounds next best, brighter than 1. Going to guess TAL-J8.
3. This one sounds muted, decay feels shorter and release a little longer. Arp ends on a high note. I'm going to say Roland Cloud.
4. This one sounds furthest off - much brighter, release feels a little long. Ending is either cutoff or Arp behavior is off. I'm guessing Arturia.

Yeah but as you said the differences seem mostly coming from the ADSR shapes, not the sound itself (I am not using headphones though).

I prefer the sound of 1, but based on similarities between the arps, i wouldnt be surprised if 2 and 3 are the hardware and tal j8 (not necessarily in that order).
My favourites are 1, 3, 2 and then 4.
I too hope that 1 is the tal j-8, sure reminds me of it.
(Only listened to headphones, will listen on studio speakers later)
Thanks for doing this.

Alrighty

The order goes - TAL J-8, Roland Cloud JP8, Arturia JP8 v4, and the real Jupiter 8

yes the last note of the JP8 Arp is cut off

TAL J8 sounds the closest to the real thing, both high and low notes, and the filter. But had to set the calibration knobs for VCO to 2, Drive to 1, and Resonance to 2. As the real JP8 is much brighter and more resonant. Still not quite as bright and shiny

Roland Cloud's high notes sound pretty different and way off.
Like the waveform is different

Arturia Jp8 V4 is completely off. The high notes are different just like in the Roland Cloud.
Sounds like there is portamento in the attack of each note.
I double checked and portamento is off.....

Interesting. So I liked the J-8 best.. Listening on at least better headphones now..
The JP-8 (#4) sounds like the cutoff is a little higher than the rest (at least than Tal-J8).

Sounds like it, but when I moved the cutoffs of the others up they sounded more buzzy.
It's just brighter due to harmonics

Post

The plugins all sound more like each other than the Jupiter-8. TAL sounds the least like it but also sounds the most pleasant, IMO.

I like 1 and 4. The last one sounds the best to me. The notes sort of weave together (more release?), there's a soft grit/saturation to it, and it's not as precise as 1. 1 sounds really pin pointy/bite/snappy and precise.

I know, these descriptors, best I can do.

Finally got to listen on my smaller studio speakers..
I definitely would not have been able to tell the hardware from these four,
I still prefer 1 the most, 3 the second most 4th every so slightly ahead of 2.

And i can better describe why 1 is my favourite:
I tend not to like too bright of sounds so it has that (so less bright for me was a positive) and unlike all the other examples including the hardware, I felt there was a connection between the higher and lower octave arps. They sounded more cohesive to me as a team, in the others (including the hardware) it could have easily been two different synths, one doing the higher arp and one the lower octave arp, to my ears.

Well it's just a matter of filter key follow, which was set quite high.
I like having the upper, lower, and mid parts sound like 3 separate riffs instead of an obvious arpeggio.
It's like what the TB-303 does so well.

I love that in the JP8 Arp, play a chord and bass note, press hold, and it becomes it's own ambient thing.
You start to hear separate intertwining sequences.
It's what I look for in a JP8 emulation, whether it can do it the same.

I find that if you put in some saturation on the software versions it gets to be closer to the hardware.
