Well, NI's licensing page for Player libraries still lists some pretty high fees:

https://www.native-instruments.com/en/s ... licensing/

Since most of the free libraries listed here are for Kontakt Player 7, I would guess that NI has waived some fees on specific products in order to get more developers on board with developing for Kontakt 7. After all, there's really not much reason for users to upgrade to the new version unless there are libraries that require it. It's true that the player remains free and can be installed alongside Kontakt 6, but surely we'll be seeing more libraries requiring the full version of Kontakt 7 soon. Maybe that was even part of the deal.

But anyway, bringing it back to the spirit of listing free stuff, Sonokinetic has a new free Electro-mechanical Piano for Kontakt Player 7:

https://www.sonokinetic.net/products/contemporary/emp/

and also their Carousel organ, which still works in Kontakt 6 (Player and Full):

you already got that one cheers

I've been thinking about this business side of plugin development for a while. They outlays for a developer to get their plugins in front of people can be huge. But the potential benefits of getting the "hook" into a potential customer outweigh that.

If it's a promotional product, they charge €2,500 for 25,000 NFR serial numbers. That's €0.10 per. You only need to get 1% of people to each spend €100 on your products to break even on the licensing cost to NI. So if you have a large catalog and can successfully position the promotional product as a part of a larger product range, you're in good shape. And the truth is, you don't even need a 1% rate of conversion. You just need five "whales" to spend €500 or so, or 0.02% of people you give your key to. Starts to look like good business, and I can't fault anyone for it.

Anyway, I love me some free Kontakt libraries lol. But I'm very wary of tasting the free samples in the cheese aisle. Might walk out heavy on cheese and light on cash. That's why the Pianobook stuff is downright heroic in my opinion.
