What does this even mean? Is this SoundFont supposed to include samples of all those Roland and Yamaha GM/XG boxes?caualucsd65 wrote: Sun Jul 16, 2023 9:57 pm Hello, everyone. GM (General MIDI) is a standard for multi-instrument samplesets so you can compose a MIDI file and get the same basic results from any GS-compliant sampleset. Yamaha XG and Roland GS are extensions of these.planetearth wrote: Mon Jul 17, 2023 12:02 amWhat does this even mean? Roland SC-55 and the rest are hardware implementations. They use PCM files (digital recordings), so any copy is likely to violate copyrights, and also violate the rules for this forum (which are perhaps unintentionally stricter than copyright rules.)
A better post title might have been "My GM sounfont that's a copy of Roland hardware GM products of the 90's."
On one hand, I applaud the OP's intent to share. That's laudable. But it doesn't follow this site's rules for sharing only what we have a legal right to share.

Yes, I know what GM and XG are. But the license on pretty much all Roland and Yamaha gear specifically states that you're not permitted to sample the presets and distribute those samples. Roland is very particular about this, and tends to go after anyone who's caught doing it, especially if they're presets Eric Persing created.JeffLearman wrote: Tue Jul 18, 2023 3:27 pmGM (General MIDI) is a standard for multi-instrument samplesets so you can compose a MIDI file and get the same basic results from any GS-compliant sampleset. I don't applaud the OP's intent to share copyrighted presets. That's why I was trying to clarify what he was implying with the post.

OK, so we're in agreement.

BTW, manufacturers frequently overstate their legal rights concerning sampling. When you buy a hardware product, you don't sign a license agreement. (And though we often do acknowledge license agreements for software products, they often include unenforceable claims, like all those rental leases we used to sign back in the bad ol' days.) So, what they say and what we can legally do are two different things.
Regardless, this site recommends following manufacturers' "agreements" or "rules" or "claims" or whatever they want to call them, and this site has every right to do so.
Roland may say I can't sample their analog synths, but that wouldn't stop me if I wanted to do it, because they don't have a legal leg to stand on, any more than Steinway can prohibit us from sampling their pianos. But I wouldn't advertise it here, because the site has its rules and I follow them.

Well, to be fair, Roland says you can't sample the presets in their synths with the intent to distribute the samples (even for free). They don't say you can't sample their synths. UVI, IKMM and others have sampled the synths to make their own sounds. (That said, UVI has had to change the name of and the sounds in their Digital Synsations sound bank a couple of times due to copyright/license issues with their D-50-type sounds.) But I take your point.JeffLearman wrote: Tue Jul 18, 2023 6:11 pm BTW, manufacturers frequently overstate their legal rights concerning sampling. Eric Persing has had several sample packs removed over the years. Whether the courts decided or whether the threat of legal action was enough to get the packs taken down, I don't know. But I do know there's a reason you can't get a Kontakt—or even SoundFont library—of D-50 sounds to this day.

Right -- the D-50 used samples! Whether a single-wave sample really constitutes a "recording" is just one of those complicated legal gray areas. (US copyright law also says you can't copyright the output of a machine -- has to be human-created. So I wonder where the D-50 samples fit in that, once again, not so clear distinction. I doubt anyone hand-selected each sample value! But IMHO unless it's a trivial waveform, someone did create it and it deserves a copyright.)

I know what these sound like, I grew up with them.caualucsd65 wrote: Sun Jul 16, 2023 9:57 pm My SoundFont is Realistic SoundFont (General MIDI, General MIDI Level 2, Roland GS, Yamaha XG, Roland SC-55, Roland SC-88, Roland SC-88Pro, Roland SC-8850, Roland SC-8820, CM-64).
Simple question, I hope you have an answer: what is so "realistic" about it?
We are the KVR collective. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.
