What synth was used...?

I'd like to start a thread where you name a famous recording and tell what synth was used. For example, did Edgar Winter play an Arp2600 in Frankenstein? what did Genesis use to record Abacab?
What did Vangelis use on Albedo 0.39? With all the retro soft synths coming out, this knowledge would be useful.

an average of 10 synths per album would be my guess for any album

It was fashionable in the seventies to list all the gear they used on the album cover. Re-releases on CD often don't have that info anymore.

For stuff of the eighties just look at the year (and month if possible) it was produced. Any synth released in the 6 months prior to that would be used, since the studio owner wanted his huge investment to be used.

In 9 out of 10 cases you can get very simular sounds with ANY analog-ish VSTi plus some vanilla effects. If they really made an effort (the other 1 out of 10 cases) then knowing what gear it was will not make it any easier to attempt to recreate the sound.

or you could just go to vintagesynth.com, look up a synth and see who played it...

Your collective wisdom is humbling.

Now that I see it in the light of day, this was a stupid idea for a thread :dog:

Not really but just a giant topic to cover. Especially when you're talking about some songs from artists like Vangelis or Jean-Michel Jarre who used multiple synths. It would probably be easier to ask about specific songs and possibly even specific sounds on specific songs.

Also see this thread, which is quite simular (and futile, much like my resistance)

I'd really like to know what synths are used on the Beach Boys Love You album but I doubt many people here own that.

Dunno what synth, but several sources have said it was "layered with piano and organ."

How's about "Good Vibrations?" Think it's a Theremin doing the vibrating? Nope! It's Paul Tanner's...

Electro-Theremin!

Has a mechanical pitch control that the player slides about, connected by dial cord to a tuning capacitor. It also makes a pure single tone rather than the the nasal, violin-like sawtooth of a real (traditional) Theremin.

=^_^=

Here's a comparison of the two, with photos. You can buy one if you're patient.

Sometimes hard to be precise , I can remember GN or his band members using polymoogs on Top of the Pops but that wasn't neccecarily any guarentee that that was used for the actual recording..

Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come - Journey (1973):
EMS VCS3, ARP2600, Bentley Rhythm Ace, Mellotron 400. Cool and innovative album, everyone sould hear it at least once.

I'd LOVE to know just what sort of cheap-arsed thing was used by Suicide...whatever it was, it rocked.

How about Led Zeppelin's All My Love? Anyone know what keyboards were used? There are 2, the strings and the solo.
I know, I know, it can easily be emulated by almost any other keyboard, I'm just curious what they used back then.
