But it's a proprietary system. It's based on the firewire standard, which today is built-in in every computer, but we still have to buy their costly solution. If they would bring out something in the low 100s it would be interesting though. But 400 euros for an interface for the Motif etc?SLiC wrote:They would crash a lot...
Seriously- I use the mLAN 01x with cubase and the potential is hudge. Mlan is a little processor heavy and isn't the lowest latency around, but the concept is great and if they get the multi PC networking over Mlan right then I think the format will be great for the future.

I thought that's the direction they were heading anyway, so no big surprise there.AD80 wrote:
If they start mixing their hardware with Cubase somehow in a truly intergrated way, I think it would be very.
I'm thinking/hoping better Yamaha than Pinnacle.
Let's see what happens, but my impression has been that the Yamaha/Steiny collab so far has been pretty good. After seeing the mlan in action, for example... it's a good thing. One firewire cable instead of 8 analog audio, plus midi, etc. would seem to be a step in the right direction.

I guess it's too late now...
Still, Yamaha is great at offering much bang for the buck. I guess we have some cool integrated hardware coming our way

I'm not so sure that XG vs. GM2 is what Yamaha has in their strategic plan for Steinberg...Alfalfa wrote:If this purchase further enflames a format war with Yamaha/Steinberg digging in and trying to entrench theirs to the exclusion of all others, then the biggest loser will be us, the users.
I think they're going to "trump" the entire MIDI format issue and push further into tiers where profits are a bit better and they can bundle a Steinberg app with every piece of hardware they sell - with studio Connections integration built-in, to boot. It's a brilliant prospective strategy, compared to the Pinnacle debacle. We wish to announce that on Dec. 20, 2004, Yamaha Corporation (Japan) and Pinnacle System Inc. (USA) signed agreements pursuant to which Yamaha will acquire the entire interest in Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH. This transaction is expected to close in mid-January, contingent on clearance by German Federal Cartel Office.
Steinberg already has a business relationship with Yamaha through Studio Connections initiative that we announced at Musikmesse in Frankfurt this year. Yamaha wishes to keep Steinberg as an independent company and it has no current intention to integrate its operations with Yamaha’s.
We are certain that our new ownership by Yamaha will provide opportunities in many areas such as product development and total system solution.

Hmmm.... I'm adopting a "wait & see" attitude on this one, considering the following:
1 Yamaha is a big multinational, and Steinberg is just one of their many little acquisitions.
2) As such, Yamaha's person-to-person tech support leaves a lot to be desired. (At least, this is my personal experience.) Hopefully this won't become Steinberg's problem as well.
3) Yamaha has shown an increasing interest in consumer level products lately, which I view as a negative trait to the pro market.
4) Yamaha's owning VST is a non-factor, as there are many other formats available. If VST went away today, the other formats would pick up the slack in no time at all.
Let's hope it's a good thing, and see how it all pans out...

The really curious bit is Yamaha saying three times 'closed competitive bidding'. This suggests that Pinnacle were selling, rather than Yamaha buying. I don't think the prospects for future products is entirely clear.YAMAHA CORPORATION (with its head office in 10-1, Nakazawa-cho, Hamamatsu-shi, Shizuoka; President: Shuji Ito) announces that it has reached a basic agreement to acquire 100% of the common stock of Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH, a division of Pinnacle Systems, Inc., a California-based maker and seller of video editing systems. The acquisition, which includes Steinberg’s US sales operations, took place through closed competitive bidding on December 20, 2004, US local time.
...
Now, YAMAHA has reached agreement to acquire all of Steinberg’s common stock through closed competitive bidding. Eying growth in the music creation market and expanded sales of sound equipment, YAMAHA has incorporated Steinberg’s assets, including its strong technical capabilities in software development and intellectual property, into its Group efforts and further strengthened these activities through joint-development projects. Having determined that Steinberg’s competitive capabilities will be very formidable going forward, YAMAHA decided to acquire all of that company’s common stock through participation in closed competitive bidding.

I think Yamaha would ask for at least a low B string to be added. Maybe their label too.LBN wrote:I think the real question on everbody's minds is: What does this mean for VB-1?

Hmmm... I wonder if Vocaloid will now be a native plugin for Cubase SX 4 now, and it comes free?
Seriously though, hopefully this will be a better marriage for Steiny.
