How do you pick an instructor for private composition / production lessons?

How do you decide between private lessons and a college class (as an adult learner)?

1. Have an introduction talk first? Ask for references & certifications? Try one lesson before committing to the full course?

2. Do you want lots of personal attention, or want to hear the questions & homework of others?

0. Is there even such a thing, specifically for composition & production?

perhaps try both but music is such a social activity I would suggest try a college course to meet people, or make sure your private instructor is very social and organises social activities.
