I have a huge collection of cassette recordings from years ago that I want to digitise - looking at Cassette Players that come with USB they all seem to just convert to MP3 or directly into iTunes but I would prefer more control over formats, for me FLAC would be ideal eg:

Anyone know a better solution?

A second hand cassette deck, record output on PC in audio editor, chop tracks, save as FLAC.

An automated system can still get it wrong when auto-detecting silences...

I bought a walkman size one 5 years ago for this, just like the one linked on amazon and it was cheap shows, since capstan motor made a lot of noise into audio.
- my case was just old musical ideas, not for fidelity, so was fine with that.
- but it did 44k wav right over usb

Agree with regular cassette deck and just run into audio interface instead.
- and fidelity will be saved as far as possible

If you get a second hand, also get a defluxer to demagnitize heads. Very easy and makes a lot of difference to sound from and old deck.

I assume it's music you want to listen to, as is.

I did this years ago the way the previous posters mention. Direct into audio interface from cassette deck. At the time I was using Peak pro which had a recording timer which end really helped doing a lot of tapes. I had nearly a hundred tapes with recordings of our band. I am not sure if any software available has a timer now though.

I had one of the cassette to usb units. I recorded audio into Reaper. I could hear it from the cassette's 3.5mm headphone jack when set as the audio card.

I record from a cassette player into soundforge via my audio interface, then edit the recordings into single tracks. Pretty much like everyone else has already suggested. there's no shortcuts so far as I know ...

Thanks - I've managed to hook up my Yamaha HiFi cassette player to my RME Fireface via the analog audio ins - tried initially to use the RCAs but for some reason that didn't work. So I can record onto any audio app now.
