this asio4all is buggy as hell for me
i’ve moved to a laptop setup with no need for an audio interface as i use a usb mic for vocals
but asio4all is a pain in the ass ( ass for the americans )
it’s buggy and slow as hell when i change settings in presonus
are there any good modern alternatives on windows 10 cheers

Maybe that just was not a very smart move...tundra5 wrote: Fri Jul 28, 2023 8:44 pm this asio4all is buggy as hell for me

Some DAWs don't need ASIO but can use WASAPI for instance.
Or get a MacBookAir.

Try FlexAsio.
For me I usually use Bitwig, which works great with WASAPI, which is built in with windows, but I also have Ableton Live which doesn't work with it. So for live I use FlexAsio if I'm not plugged into an audio interface. You can also download a GUI for it.

You mention you are using a USB mic. I bought a Blue Yeti USB mic and only found out after purchase that it is not asio compliant. The latency was very poor.tundra5 wrote: Fri Jul 28, 2023 8:44 pm this asio4all is buggy as hell for me

But typically has terrible latency, which is going to be a problem when recording.
I've used the Flex drivers for streaming in the past, but not sure what the latency is like. Another option is ASIOLinkPro, which is kinda overkill for this and not that easy to set up, but the latency seems pretty good.
The real answer is a proper audio interface and a decent (non-USB) mic, but if you blew all your money on the laptop...

The latest version of FL ASIO is quite good.

Voicemeeter banana is a mixer app, while it’s really cool, for me it exposed how poor windows audio system is. On the laptop I tried to solve my audio mixing issues with using voicemeeter I became extremely frustrated, because my microphone is hard coded and voicemeeter could not disable it as an input. Between that and latency that I could not fix with all the available tweaks, I was forced to go to MacBook Pro and have never looked back. The Mac has a vastly superior audio system built in, with infinite control using rogue amoeba loop back and soundsource apps.

If you're not bothered about having something hanging out the laptop, I'd even consider buying the cheapest used ASIO interface with decent drivers just to get peace of mind. I've never found ASIO4ALL, FL ASIO or any alternative to be anything other than complete dogshit tbh.
If you can wangle it in the future, go Macbook if you need to be mobile. The audio drivers on Mac are as good as anything ASIO related and the Apple silicon is absurdly powerful for the money now. I use Mac and PC, have no bias towards either, but Apple destroys PC once you go laptop.

In Voivemeeter Banana, even if you cant disable the built in mic you should still be able to mute it, I personally found it ok.

@bibz1st, the setting to mute would not stay set, I have no explanation as to why that was. I really thought the apps was pretty cool bit of software, I could make do with banana, it was the DPC latency that was causing crackling issues that I could never tame. NVIDIA and power management drivers were the main offenders. Not sure if the new NVIDIA drivers would help. From my reading they help with the 4xxxx but haven’t seen anything implying 3xxxx. I really don’t have time to mess with that anymore.

This thread confirms USB microphones are only useful for making podcasts.
