i’m for ever trying to get a synth or a sound pack
and go through them to get the lush sounds i want
how do you stop procrastination ?
do you make a template and have some sounds set up ?
and just start with them then change
because man seriously i’ve wasted too much time
doing this and frankly it’s soo flipping boring
having too many sounds flicking through them
can some of you who get stuff done
tell me what your process is and how you keep it minimal and fun
because this is why i get bored with the production process ( i don’t have this problem with the basics of songwriting off the computer
thanks for your comments

Sure, explore your tools and save presets, and channel strips in the daw.
Once you are producing, you already should have all the presets, knowledge and experience with your tools.
You shouldn’t introduce any new tool or surf the internet during production time…

I do not spend any time with sound design. I just use presets made by others that use MPE on Surge XT, then play them on my LinnStrument, which is my only MPE hardware controller. The situation is very simple and designed for me to work right away.tundra5 wrote: Sat Jul 29, 2023 11:39 pm i’m for ever trying to get a synth or a sound pack

Procrastination is part of the process. If you enjoy the actual process of making music, then speed and having things like templates is not a priority. Just something you do. Whereas if you're Bones and you hate the process and the absolute only end point is having finalised songs then I get your dilemma. Personally I just never found the process of finding and making sounds onerous. Templates for DAWs aren't any use to me as I really don't do the same thing every time. If you do the same thing every time...your songs are likely to sound the same too (IMO). If that's your aim, OK then. BUt I'm not a pro, and don't want to be, so my aims might be different.
Procrastination is not just part of the process, it's part of the fun.

The way I do it, is to kind of know what kind of sound I think would fit, load a plugin I think would have that kind of sound, preset hop all the way until I find one in the ballpark and tweak it until it sounds the way I want

in some cases procrastination might not be procrastination?
in 2011 i told myself
"i will make one thousand songs by 2020"
it's 2023 now and i have about 40 songs
and they are all terrible compared to
my musical heroes's songs
the beatles wrote about 400 songs in ten years
and there are 3 songwriters in that band
maybe john lennon wrote 200 songs
and paul wrote 175 songs
and george wrote 25 songs
so, i beat george's output by about 15 songs
hahahahahahahahahaha
but seriously though, what's the point of
having so many songs if they are all bad?
better to get good first
before being prolific?
it's literally insane to keep doing the same thing
without improvement?
well, if that's the goal, i mean
to get good and not just to enjoy
you improve or get good by being in a situation
where "you have to" write songs?
in the beginning, john and paul
"had to" write songs for their record company?
they had deadlines that were imposed by necessity?
it's like what's the point of having
all that excercise machines if you don't have to use them?
better get a job where you are required to move a lot?
i'm just mainly asking
i'm not sure myself
maybe i'm just justifying procrastination
i'm almost sure i am
slacker here after all
oh wait, the topic is about choosing sound?
and not about songmaking procrastination?
hey, maybe it's the same thing?

No. A few thing help me. First, I don’t think any sound is so precious that it’s going to be perfect. Second, I know sound design fairly well, so I can usually make my sound from scratch faster than going through presets (though I find going to presets to be fun and kind of relaxing, though I don’t do it when I’m working on a sound) and if I do use a preset, it doesn’t have to be exactly what I want because I know enough to be able to take something that’s in the ball park and make it what I want.

Split your sessions into two types. One, where you learn your tools and save presets and channel strips. Leads, bass, pads, drum loops, etc. For channel strips combinations of effects, say for example a channel strip for back lead with delay, reverb, eq, comp.tundra5 wrote: Sun Jul 30, 2023 12:32 amtbh from a long point away i’m coming back to reason to be exact soroman.i wrote: Sun Jul 30, 2023 12:15 am Sure, explore your tools and save presets, and channel strips in the daw.

Second where you produce using these presets.
When you produce you pick one of the presets, tweak it a little bit, drop a channel strip on it for effects, tune a little bit, continue.

please don’t be offended
do you get a lot of stuff done ? ( like music not making sounds )
or do you enjoy playing and messing around a lot ?
do you enjoy
the time on your own a lot ?
do you get out a lot or are you a socially isolated person ?
nothing personal just some valid things i have to answer for myself
i get caught up in playing around and get nothing done if i don’t have a plan and choose just a couple of things and start
and if i spend too much time on the computer messing around i come off completly shy and in my own world ( no i don’t smoke weed “lol )
but yeah i need to be on there two three hours max get off and do other shit or i go mental
so f**king around with sounds can easily turn into 3-4 hours
i just don’t enjoy it i’d rather have the presets there so i can tweak
but it’s so hard getting good presets im moaning thank you
