Kind of strange nobody on #kvr is talking about this.

PSP BinAmp

class A triode preamplifier!
PSP BinAmp is a Class A triode* preamp emulation. The specific preamp's implementation is based on that of the legendary Binson Echorec 2 delay.

The Echorec 2 (in Italian, Echorec 2º meaning “the second Echorec”) was one of a line of famous magnetic drum delays designed and built by Binson Amplificatori Hi-Fi S. p. A. since the 1950s. The Echorec 2 was released in 1960, and is considered by many to be the best-sounding in the line. It had unprecedented quality compared to the tape delays of the era, with a warm and musical sound due to the distinctive character of its Class A triode tube design.

Although the Echorec 2 was incredible for many reasons, the inspiration for PSP BinAmp came from the ingenious design and wonderful sound of its preamplifier. This easy-to-use plug-in provides rich, easily controllable saturation that sounds great on everything from drums and vocals to electric pianos, synthesizers, and drum loops.

Added features include high pass filtering and high-frequency rolloff, a –20 dB pad with output gain compensation, polarity switching at input and output, blend control for saturated/unsaturated signals, and a unique Variation setting that adjusts the individual behavior of multiple instances of the plug-in across your DAW session.

Simple to use and wonderful to hear, PSP BinAmp gives your tracks a little (or a lot) of that rich Binson tone.

Weird that they only modeled the preamp of the Echorec, and not the echo.

When I think of the Echorec, I dont think the preamp has ever run across my mind. And this is after like 30 something years of being obsessed with Syd Barrett/The Pink Floyd..

I think its pretty cool, i got too many full echorec sims. Dunno if ill grab it, even at
my $38 offer im not really wanting to pay that much these days.

Same. I know there are some Echoplex Preamp pedals (like the Xotic EP Booster) that people use as boosts/drives, so I guess that's what PSP was going for with the Binson, but it struck me as an odd choice too.

Post

Eddie Van Halen used an Echoplex as a preamp into his amp. Even before that, Richie Blackmore was doing the same with an Aiwa reel-to-reel tape recorder.

But that's still no excuse for PSP to make an incomplete model.
There are plugins out there that model both the preamp and the echo and can be used for both tasks already.

Pretty sure PSP will release this as a delay as well.

I have the Pulsar one, which is pretty cool, but I'd definitely pick up a PSP version!

The Audiority is better if anyone is looking for a more vintage sound. Pulsar stuff always sounds polished and a bit plastic to my ears.

Having experience with a friend's real Echorec, in my opinion the Pulsar Audio one sounds much closer to the hardware than Audiority. Regardless of accuracy, I think it sounds much better than the Audiority one too (of course in my opinion and for my taste/needs).

Not sure why they'd bother with this without the delay. Seems a waste to buy a second plugin to get the delay if they release one.

I'm a fan of PSP, i think their stuff sounds amazing and i like their designs. That "said" i too am thinking "why just a preamp?" I know that making some $$ is necessary (some loudmouths here would say it's their only reason but i don't agree in the least) but i'd really like to see this preamp attached to Echo (or MD608). Yeah in the KVR fashion i should just buy it...

Good to know! Still don’t like the Pulsar house sound and much prefer Audiority.

there's a pretty lively discussion happening on GS about this one. Give it a try and let us know what you find. It's got a few quirks, but I really dig the sound of the saturation. It's a specific flavor, but one that I was missing. Reminds me a bit of the Kush Omega 458A, but they break up differently.

This thing sounds great. Good call comparing to one of the Kush Omega's - has that vibe.

After warmth welcome of the PSP BinAmp's processing quality we feel encouraged to work on the emulation of the entire drum delay and we seriously consider it. However, we are also very pleased that the PSP BinAmp was released as an individual preamp plug-in. We are glad that that this plug-in does a good work for its users.
