neverbefore wrote: Thu Aug 03, 2023 2:05 am buying new gear can be a way of feeling like you are a musician, that you belong in the world of musicians, when it doesn't mean that at all, it is just consumerism. One of the features of consumerism is the replacement of doing and being with buying and owning.
There is an element of consumerism to what we do here, but that's not the whole truth. Finding an instrument that really works with you is a damn trying experience and no demos on YT can help you with that process. You really need to sit down and work with something for weeks before you know. Example, I researched the Nord Lead 4 to bits before I bought it. Listened to demos, talked to lots of people. I found one in a store and played it for about an hour. It checked all my boxes. Two months later I found it to be one the most boring an uninspiring instrument I ever owned.

Finding stuff that you love takes time.
agree 100% on the time to try factor - that's a big reason why I said 'can be a way'.
One of the most annoying things about not being able to always resell software is that something may turn out less than worthwhile and you get stuck with it. Has happened to me in the last week that something I thought could be resold could not. Now I have something of no use and someone else hasn't got something that may be good for them.

(and youtube demos can be very misleading, particularly with sample libraries)

All the recent Espen Kraft videos where he's replacing his vintage synths with a Prophet-X.

Speaking of procrastinating with buying, I just bought your Model Cycles pack.

This thread is golden, good deep lol. I think there's some middle ground here. I just commented on this exact subject in the "what should i buy" thread. A person just starting likely doesn't "need" the very best equipment money can buy. She could probably do fine with decent stuff. There is a line of quality that makes a difference to me (and did way back when), i bought a Rickenbacker bass guitar to replace my Kay starter which was poor quality, this was after a year though. I was pretty sure that i wanted to keep playing bass.
Nowadayz a decent set of monitors will set you back a few hundred USD imo. If i'm playing synthesizers i definitely want decent monitors, playing bass guitar and getting good amps and speakers made a huge difference to me. Do i "need" 10K USD monitors like Barefoot or Neumman? No (donations are welcome, though). As i commented on that other post, buying everything seems like possible procrastinationstation but upgrading your gear as you get better/more involved yeah.

Oh God now you are awakening the beast of unlimited GAS. Damn... I managed to push out the X from my radar.

Damn you are really opening a can of worms there. I have actually given up on reselling plugins at this point. Too many EULAs and weird rules and even weirder transfer fees. But yeah, it's basically the same thing. You need to work with plugins in a real project in order to actually know if it fits with your flow or not. That takes some time.

What did you buy that didn't work for you?

How much time do you have :)

Last was a Tracktion plugin Abyss - nothing wrong with it at all but in the end I never used it. Same with all of the Dawesome plugins - fine plugins but not for me. I thought Tracktion allowed transfers but apparently their licenses cant be transferred except on a case by case basis. I sold a couple which they were ok with but they baulked at Abyss which was my last attempt.

I think they are a good company making fine products but I do wish the license had been a bit more obvious.

it can mean putting off doing stuff with the gear u have rather than wanting new stuff
and yet 'can be' is not the same as 'is'

Yeah, it's all about the 'elapsed time' between the initial impression, "Ooooh, now that's really cool!!!" :hyper:

yeah exactly maybe i could word it better but what i meant was

you’ll sit there for a month with what you already have and maybe do nothing .

and say ah man when i get a new cool synth or some speakers “ i’m doing this “

but it doesn’t work
you have to find joy in what you have already first , like that tv or that couch you had for 8 years then get something new when you need it , or maybe at least start getting some use out of it or better at the game a bit before u upgrade

the amount of times i’ve seen someone just get a lush studio built and they can’t use it

case in point
my brother

get a new desk a computer some speakers

some dodgy sound card and mic set off amazon

but the guy can’t even use a daw and when i’ve showed him before i could see he found it hard
and hasn’t tried to learn since then ( maybe a year ago now ) but now he is getting this new stuff he is fired up

i think he will show five mins of use before all that stuff is in the pawn shop
( my brother not harsh )

but yeah so many guitars on ebay ( craigslist for you americans )

where people buy an amazing guitar before they have plucked a string

but i’m
getting into many territories here

lol
