SOLVED: solution was a barberpole phaser such as sinevibes whirl, or a frequency shifter such as a full buckets frequency shifter. works like a charm!
Hi guys, I wanna make a phaser bass similar to the one in this song at 3:13
There are videos on how to do it using harmor and they're good, but I wanna know if it's possible to achieve a similar phasing effect outside of harmor? The reason is: I wanna use fm and additive synthesis to make my basses rather than subtractive.
I've tried to achieve it using 3rd party phaser plugins, in serum and vital fx, as well as using creative filters like uvi shade, but I really struggle to get the same result.
Harmor works differently to other synths in that it is an additive synth like NI razor disguised as a subtractive synth. So I know it's filtering works differently where its not actually filtering the sound but removing partials. Still, I'm trying to emulate a similar sound using 3rd party phasers to no avail.
Otherwise, I don't think there's a way to use harmor just for it's phaser like you would use "serum fx" right?
My last resort would be to make an fm/additive bass in another synth and then resample in harmor, but I'd prefer not to as Id like to adjust the fm and additive synthesis in tandem with the phaser.

This doesnt make sense. Harmor is an additive synth.Digitt wrote: Sun Jul 23, 2023 11:27 am Hi guys, I wanna make a phaser bass similar to the one in this song at 3:13

An idiot on Set Theory:

I'm not aware of any other way to make Harmor work similar to an effect plugin. By the way, if you linked all your modulations to a "macro" knob in your additive/fm synth, then recorded the full modulation of the knob, you could effectively adjust the modulation together with the phaser by just scrubbing through the recording using Harmor's time controls. Something else to keep in mind is that if you want to resample stereo sounds you'll have to use both the "A" and "B" part of Harmor set to mid and side to make that work properly.Digitt wrote: Sun Jul 23, 2023 11:27 am

you just need to follow your imagination.
sometimes unplanned result in best outcome.

I know it's additive, but it doesn't do FM. So when I said I need "fm AND additive" i was referring to the fm part that's missing in harmorwhyterabbyt wrote: Sun Jul 23, 2023 1:21 pmThis doesnt make sense. This isn't really a helpful comment. I posted here to get some technical tips on how to create a sound. Of course I've been experimenting for hours without seeing results, I've tried all kinds of things. "follow your imagination" isn't helpful.omahlay1800 wrote: Sun Jul 30, 2023 4:01 am you just need to follow your imagination.

thanks. for a last resort I can do this but I'd really like to avoid needing to. Any ideas on how to emulate harmor's phaser in other plugins? So there's still something missing that au5 has, and I cant put my finger on it. So will just explain a few of the processes I tried now using your preset and experimenting with harmor as well.
First, go to harmor and make a detuned saw and then put an envelope on the phaser width going down. You can hear as the phaser sweeps through it really phases out some frequencies entirely. This is cos harmor as an additive engine doesn't actually filter out existing frequencies but removed the harmonics individually. I can't seem to get that with any other phasers I've tried. Pigments came close.
Trying that on harmor can technically achieve that kind of effect and harmors phaser sounds awesome but it provides little control over the wobbling.
So I didn't think to use your method of just an lfo on a filter. I found after experimenting with your preset that reducing the lfo amount to a very small amount gives it a more watery wobble. That being said it is still missing another element. I still can't place whether au5 is using filters or phasers or a combo of both to control his wobbles.
If you listen at 3:06, it has another break where the bass is more isolated in the track. In that instance, there's not really a wobble. i think in both of those breaks, its using this other technique and in the 3:13 one its got the wobble as well.
so i cant figure out what the other element is. ive tried some creative band pass filtering, as well as a resonant highpass using uvi shade instead of vitals filter but still to no avail. it sounds like its highpassing at the start then bringing in the bass frequencies at the end along with some higher grittier frequencies.
one technique that may not be relevant here but seems like a good idea in general, is instead of making a comb/phaser shaped filter in shade, i just made individual bells that are static and as you sweep other filters around, the sound will sort of comb through them.
still struggling. gonna try morph eq as well sometime. didnt have much time to experiment so far.
thanks again.

As far as I can tell, this synth is actually additive. An FM wave. It is not substractive.

In Harmor's phaser there are many features that are difficult to emulate in a traditional subtractive-style phaser. However, the 'Classic' type of the Harmor's phaser can be emulated quite closely using a traditional barberpole (endless) phaser.Digitt wrote: Sun Aug 06, 2023 12:09 pm Any ideas on how to emulate harmor's phaser in other plugins? Barberpole phaser VST plugins seem to be pretty rare. Maybe the best solution would be to use NI Reaktor. You can create a barberpole phaser relatively easily based on Reaktor's core library Phaser. And then edit the structure to replace the 'Phaser 6N Stereo' macro with a 'Barberpole Phaser' macro. Use a bit of internal oversampling, like 58.8kHz, to get rid of high frequency cramping.
To increase number of notches, you can duplicate the allpass-filter chains inside the macro. Some other minor tweak are also needed, but it shouldn't be too difficult to figure out if you are familiar with structure editing in Reaktor.
To get deeper notches you could put multiple phasers in series. That's easy in Reaktor, but works also with any VST phaser + some macro controls in your DAW. There are probably more intelligent ways to do it in DSP, but multiple phasers in series is just a simple brute-force solution.

I will def give this a go and post when I've given it a try! Thank you!
