Joni Mitchell's song "Big Yellow Taxi" contains the following recurring line:

"They paved paradise and put up a parking lot"

I'm sorry, but while you can put up buildings, you can't put "up" a parking lot. Buildings are typically tall, compared to a person, and it makes sense to refer to putting them "up". Parking lots typically have no height at all. So, it makes no sense to refer to putting "up" a parking lot. I know this is a classic and beloved song for many, but that line always makes me cringe.

This line would have made far more sense:
"They paved paradise, now it's a parking lot"

She is an excellent lyricist - it's not being sloppy, it just scans better as "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot". "Now it's a parking lot' just doesn't work. Poetic license (That being said personally I think it's one of her worst songs but I guess she had to make a few poppier tracks to make some money once in a while - and it is intended as kindof a humorous song anyway)
