Whenever Roland has named a synthesizer JUPITER or JP, it’s a flagship model that implements the state-of-the-art technologies of that era." -Akihiro Nagata

Funny how they leaped from jp8000 straight to jup- x without mentioning the jupiter 80 (2011).
Itwas the big flagship at that time , but I guess their sns technology just didn’t really cut it for decent VA duties .
I can’t blame them for forgetting it

Perhaps it’s because it didn’t help selling millions of records ?gentleclockdivider wrote: Sun Aug 13, 2023 12:39 amQuotezvenx wrote: Sat Aug 12, 2023 3:24 pm Found this very interesting.

The Jupiter 8 was not the only synth that was used to Make Thriller
These Synths Yamaha CS-80, Sequential Prophet-5, Roland Jupiter-8, Minimoog, ARP 2600, E-mu Emulator I, Synclavier II and Oberheim OB-X did help him to sell 70M Copies and not the Jupiter 8 alone + He was Michael Jackson and not some Random Dude that no one knew about.
People talk about the Jupiter 8 as a Holy Grail Synth when it is not.

Bit of an off-topic: Anthony Marinelli has a lot of interesting stories on how those classic sounds were made:D-Fusion wrote: Sun Aug 13, 2023 7:05 am The Jupiter 8 was not the only synth that was used to Make Thriller![]()

Already Subscribed to this guy a few months ago and he has some great tutorials and a good ear
Sometimes when he makes a sound he also says that the sound can be recreated on any 2 Oscillator Synth to get in the same ballpark so you don't need that specific synth he uses to follow the Tutorial
Like in this video after the intro:

Every single synth you listed here is a holy grail synth.D-Fusion wrote: Sun Aug 13, 2023 7:05 am These Synths Yamaha CS-80, Sequential Prophet-5, Roland Jupiter-8, Minimoog, ARP 2600, E-mu Emulator I, Synclavier II and Oberheim OB-X did help him to sell 70M Copies and not the Jupiter 8 alone + He was Michael Jackson and not some Random Dude that no one knew about.

They are good for those few "Classic" sounds that no one uses anymore except for Playing
Their favorite Old songs
They are not magic hit making Machines just because they where used on hit Records back then when they had nothing else to use to make those songs.
A Hit Record Comes from the Artist and not the Instruments used.

They are also still used a quite often in film/tv scoring industry AND there is somewhat a resurgence of the 80's sounds with Bruno Mars, Dua Lipa etc.
But indeed I agree they aren't magic hit makers per se... though part of the success of the resurgence is the familiarity of sounds, the emotional memory as a friend of mine calls it.

True but many Artists these days use plugins and not the Vintage gear to get there.zvenx wrote: Sun Aug 13, 2023 2:37 pm They are also still used a quite often in film/tv scoring industry AND there is somewhat a resurgence of the 80's sounds with Bruno Mars, Dua Lipa etc.

hang around in forums like this and you quickly learn that comments identical to the above are dispersed every ninth day by Home Producer X who feels the need to 'educate' the rest of us by repeating the most obvious, well known adages of the trade. we know, dude, we know. and guess what: hardware fetishization will continue, regardless. "what gear did X use" threads will continue, regardless.

My friend, your irony shines as brightly as a supernova in a universe of subtlety. It's like you've harnessed the power of ten sarcasm generators and channeled it into a single forum post.
