The DAW is great although not always straightforward. The GUI is horrible IMO and a mess of so many different styles, but there's some acceptable themes out there. Perhaps check the new one from Reapertips.com.

i think it was in the ballpark around 130-150MB or so, which of course is still pretty good

just checked on my Mac and the installation is 143.8MB here for the latest release. And Mac installations are usually larger than on windows

If by "item" you are specifically referring to REAPER's "media item", I don't think that's possible (and if it is, I'd also like to know)
