Exit Zero, I kinda-sorta agree with quincy, kinda-sorta with you. As a Lego enthusiast of many years, I've got some thoughts on this. (Surprise!)

The "box of parts with ready-to-play composition(s)" idea is very much in the Lego spirit. :-) Most Lego sets come with a sheet or booklet of instructions showing, step-by-step, how to make the main model using the parts included (or most of them). Easy if you're observant and follow the directions carefully.

Then they have a picture or two of alternate models, either in the booklet or on the box... but usually without detailed directions on how to build those. The builder has to examine the pictures, consider the parts in the set, and work out for her- or himself how to build the model.

This encourages analytical thinking and a degree of creativity that the step-by-step instructions don't allow. It teaches young (or just playful) people how to use available resources to achieve a result, but makes them rely on their visual and spatial imagination to get there.

A "toolbox" -- or, perhaps more appropirately, "partsbox" -- full of goodies, complete with one model ready to try out... that's not too bad an idea IMO. As long as it's made clear that the pieces are MEANT to be disassembled and used on their own, and as long as the pieces are in fact sufficiently non-specialized to make them usable in many arrangements, I like this idea.

Finally, of course, the most creative fun comes from grabbing all the pieces from this set and that, then seeing what you can come up with using no directions but the ones in your head!

What I don't like so much in some modern Lego sets is the parts that can't be adapted to make other things than what they were designed to look like. But those are the exceptions. By and large they do an excellent job of providing generic pieces that leave a lot up to the imagination.

Very like a good assortment of musical samples, loops, etc. :-)

P.S.: I say "toolbox" rather than "tackle box." Nothing personal, I just don't do much fishing. For that, please contact my hybrid river otter/pine marten alternate persona, Rhayader Gwy. :-D He loves to fish.

Very interesting comments all around! If people are seeing Tacklebox as a set of "building blocks" then we are going to be happy as that is exactly what we wanted it to be. We really tried hard to avoid the whole "Construction Kit" thing at all costs. We also tried very hard to make it as "genre-neutral" as possible. People should be able to use these sounds for just about any style out there. We left it very open ended intentionally.

The main focus was put on getting down with these insane machines, coaxing unique and inspiring sounds out of them, and getting it to disk at high quality. We've assembled, pitched, and organized the sounds. The rest is up to you.

Now having said that, we know there are lots of uses for genre-specific collections and even construction kit type libraries. That's why we are encouraging producers of "static" sample libraries to get in touch with us and we'll create a LiveFill version of your product as well. Establishing a format for adding collections to Ableton Live will let creators of these collections reach a rapidly growing platform and audience while giving users of all needs/wants fresh content to use in Live.

The response so far has been great and as the community continues to embrace the format we're sure to see lots of great stuff happen in the future. Please keep your comments and feedback coming. It means a lot to us.

Happy Music Making,

I liked the wusikstation with the Dopetwistas soundset - that too was kind of an eyeopener as to what can be done. A toolbox for Live in particular sounds good to me!

At $39 it's certainly worth a try...I just ordered the tacklebox (just to burn a deeper hole in my CC before Christmas). ;)

Hi ...

I don't own Live (nor do I plan to), but I just wanted to mention that I think TrackTeam Audio has got a great team on staff for the marketing of this product. I fully prepared to laugh at it, but on the strength of the replies in this thread from TrackTeam, I'd buy it (if I was a Live user). So, for whatever that's worth, your posts are hypnotically well-prepared and effective. I'm impressed.
