does anyone know if:
1. there is a list somewhere that shows all the CC#'s for various parameters in cubase VSTi's? namely Monolouge and a-1 and such.
2. a way you can control VST effects in cubase using midi? or anyway to link certain wheels, ect, on my midi controller to plugins that don't have MIDI learn functions?

Post

Look up the generic remote control options.
There's MIDI learn for each and every parameter.
The only downside being that you will have to record it to track automation rather than just recording MIDI data (in short: it's only rerouting input CC data to plugins and mixer parameters, won't work with recorded data).

awesome, thank you very much. this is exactly what i was wanting to do

1.I'm sure I remember seeing a cc list in the manual in the section under instruments and FX.

2. Another way with FX that don't have midi learn is to use the input transformer thingy. You can map one controller to another. So, say you want to control filter cutoff on cc71 with your mod wheel...you map cc1 to cc71. You can do that with all the 127 ccs. The pitfall of that is that you then have to go back and remap when you want to use standard cc routing on say instruments that use the normal cc options. (If I remember correctly, there is a single global reset button though, and I think you can store cc map tables, but I'm not entirely confident about that one).
That should do it with most plugins, as they tend to use a standardised set of cc numbers for all the main parameters. Of course if you have a plugin that doesn't respond to midi, then automation is the way to go.

hmm...i can't seem to find this (my dumb ass is having problems figureing out the generic controller as well, something easier such as this would be nice.

Hear hear... I know what you're saying.
But when I suggested certain things for an easier AND more flexible way of assigning things (such as a Cubase-internal MIDI learn which would be easy to access) in another thread I got jumped on quite a bit...

As for the input transformer: kritikon, there's a global AND a loccal version - so you can actually have settings only valid per track/instrument.
It's the small button over the "e" button in the upper right of the inspector part also showing the MIDI ins and outs.
However, this won't work with any instruments not offering CC implementation per se.

As for the generic remote, here's a quick how to, but mind you, controlling some VSTi parameters won't work in SX 2, also, in SX 2 this seems to be VERY unreliable:
- Open Device Setup.
- Go to "Add/Remove", select "Generic Remote" and click "add" - should now show up on the left.
- Select it on the left and select the "Setup" Tab again.
- Select your MIDI in (you could allready select a loaded VSTi as an output as well, but it's irrelevant).
- Select the first line of the upper field (should allready say something like "Controller").
- Press and hold (!) "Learn" while moving a controller on your device. When releasing "Learn" it should show up. Note: It sometimes doesn't as this is buggy as hell in SX 2. So you may have to repeat trying.
- Select the first line in the lower row. Let's say you wanted to control cutoff of Antti's ASynth (which is what I randomly picked out).
- Set "Device" to "ASynth" (or every other synth).
- "Channel/Category" should be at "Device" then too allready.
- When now clicking on the entry under "Value/Action" you should see the synths parameters there.
- Assign and press "Apply".
=> Done.
In case you wanted to control some mixer related stuff, select VST Mixer under Device, Select the mixer channel (could be an audio or VSTi channel) under Channel/Category and all the faders, sends and whatever should show up under Value/Action.

OK, things to remember:
- You NEED to save this setting in the Device Setup Menu. Otherwise it'll be lost once you close your song. Lame, IMO, there should be an option to save it with a song.
- Once saved, this setting will remain active for ALL your projects - it's a global rather than a per song thing. So:
- If you wanted to save a certain setting with a song, you'd need to save it as a special file, say, in your song folder - and load it as well, whenever you load the song.
- You can ONLY write to automation tracks that way. Biggest drawback for me.

IMO there's TONs of room for improvements here, but hey, this is Steinberg... and I don't expect them to make it more user friendly any day soon.

Hope that helped though.

to 'death sleeps'
cool stuff, and as always good to see another southener at kvr.

and nashville has all types of music...namely...christian music and country music.... but we do have some pretty cool, sophisticated pop bands here.
