I've been kind of on the fence on getting one of these and have watched a bunch of vids and read reviews. There's definitely a ton of praise for what it does at its cost point. My use case will be primarily just playing directly into headphones as I live in tight quarters and can't really play loud. Anyway, what is clear (from my reading) is that there are some great 3rd party capture offerings out there. What's not as clear (or seems to have mixed reviews) is whether the captures you get with the device (or those that can be downloaded free from the tonenet) are very good? I really don't want to get it and then have that be just the "initial investment" where to get good tones I need to buy a whole bunch of extra stuff. I know that might be asking too much considering the cost but figured I'd ask here for some unbiased input from some actual users. So if you own one, what are your opinions on the stock captures? Thanks in advance for any input!

If you get it from us, I'll give you the captures I made of a 1964 Vibrolux, a 1964 Princeton, and a 1973 Mark 1. If anyone else who bought TONEX from us (either pedal or software) is reading this, feel free PM me your account email and I'll send them to you.

With that said, the stock tones are quite good and you can use amp captures with different cabinet IR's for added versatility. They're well organized, too, and it's easy to find what you're looking for. If you do end up buying captures, the Big Hairy Profiles Marshall pack is a good way to go:

Thanks for the reply! I do try to buy from your shop generally but if I do get this I'll use as many jampoints as possible. My only hesitation is just how so much of the hype (vids, reviews) seems to heap praise on the 3rd party captures and rarely address the stock ones or if they do it's almost in passing. That just gives me pause...

Anyway, thanks though for the feedback.

No problem. PM me your account email and I'll send you my captures. I made them like a Tilt EQ, where the Treble and Bass controls are moved inversely (Mids and Gain in the case of the Mark 1).

The stock profiles are pretty good overall. But there is just some really great third-party stuff out there. I really like the Amalgam Audio stuff for instance. He's probably the most universally praised TONEX vendor for clean to crunch/drive tones. Doesn't do super hi-gain stuff if that's what you're into.

I've done a ton of captures of my amps and released all for free. I've got 1979 Princeton Reverb that was modded to blackface cosmetics and specs by the prior owner, then I had a Andy Fuchs' team throw in a mids pot in the back (Andy praised the work done by the prior owner). I've also done some Vox AC15C1X captures, Supro Keeley 1968RK, some other amps and a ton of pedals. Some of these are think I quite good. There are other great free profiles available if you'ee willing to be patient and look. I'm a big TONEX fan. I think the whole platform is killer.

Hey Uncle E, I didn't buy TONEX from you but haven't gotten other stuff over the years. Any chance I can get in on that offer please? From one fellow TONEX capturer to another, both with Princeton Reverbs.

Thanks for your feedback. And I have seen a lot of references to the Amalgam Audio stuff in various reviews and other forum posts. It's weird though, I just haven't seen a whole lot said one way or the other about the stock captures. Actually a few but not much and they seem split 50/50. So I do appreciate you guys taking the time to reply. Still on the fence but maybe leaning a little closer to making the buy...

The stock captures are hot or miss but you can easily download thousands of free ones. Just sort them in the Tonex browser by popularity and you'll have instant access to many hundreds of great captures.

Thanks! That's kind of the impression I'm getting. It seems like there are going to be a lot of pretty good captures out there for free of a lot of the most iconic amps so that's really all I'm trying to confirm. And I imagine over time they'll only get better...

I don’t have the pedal but use the plugin. Many of the capture venders have a free amp or pack that you can download. It’s a great way to try some stuff and see the possibilities with dropping any money or wading through thousands of captures on tone.net.
You might even get lucky and find everything you need in the free stuff.

I bought the Tonex Max plugin, and I’ve never felt the need to spend an extra penny on 3rd party captures. I’d say about half the IK factory captures are good… some ridiculously bad. That said, there’s a shit ton of them, so there’s something you’ll like, no doubt. Also, there are a few great contributors that have free captures in tone.net that are fantastic. Some guy whose handle starts with UR has a ton of great stuff. After a while you’ll find your favorites. Great plugin. Better yet, you can use them in Amplitube and that’s when things really get interesting.

Thanks! This definitely helps. Probably going to put in an order in the next few days based mostly on the recommendations here...

Cool, thanks for commenting. It sounds like at this point it's worth giving it a go. Your comment was definitely what I was hoping to hear. Anyway, again thanks to all that replied!
