Best digital multitrack recorder for beginners (or on a budget)?

The only issue here is does it have midi synch in / out! I bought an old tascam 24CD with the midi output - that sends all my gear the clock for that. The zoom ones don't have that function. Make sure you know what you're getting! (I think the tascam model 12 has midi clock...)

I think so too, as I recall it even has mtc sync as I was looking how to sync video on an external player. And a proper din midi out.

I think the others has similar, but only over usb midi and then we are in computerland again. It's only Akai MPC X that can act as usb host as well as I found then, it could extend existing midi ports with regular class compliant midi interfaces for computer.

But seems OP was intimidated over so many knobs.

I ran cassette based portastudios in the 80's, and hdd based beginning millenium before I went daw. It's fun to upgrade stuff too.

Thing about them is the display is too small. I had 2 Roland VSs, and that was a hassle. Editing is not as easy, pre-amps not that great.

Now that I think about it, a Tascam Model 12 would be great for me, and it's only a little bigger than my Launchpad. How do its recording, editing, and bouncing features compare to the DP series?
