at least with paid upgrades, they do have to keep everyone happy not just new users.
How you keep people happy by paid upgrade?
discounts compared to a new user, and interesting updates, new stuff, that makes you want to upgrade.
not that free upgrades arent nice, but coders have to be paid, if you want them to code

a fair price and worthwhile updates, would make most users happy no?

Very easily... you have to deliver what user like to see... otherwise they (some or many...depends) probably will not upgrade and you lose money you could have earned...

If you don´t earn any money with upgrades anyway you can actually do what you want... make users happy by doing stuff they want to see or make nonsense updates with some gimmicks... users cannot "punish" you if you failed...

I rather not paying for an update that has some stuff I need and some I also need but are not there yet and I’m in conflict with the update fee.
While if it’s free, for life in the case of FL, I may still unsatisfied for some needed features not yet implemented but… the horse is free.

For the life of me, I can’t use FL, but I’m stuck with free gifts for life

Coders have to be paid if they earn it…
But this is too much of a subjective view…

I remember a popular Italian jeans maker that was asked how was he dealing with the knock-off of his jeans flooding the Italian and European markets:

Sure! He said. I had to make most of those fakes in China myself.
Now I profit from both markets. :hihi:

Unfortunately software cracks are free…. Can’t use the same strategy :help:

You have been to Yorkshire. I've seen you.

I'd be a tad miffed if I awoke to discover my sequencer/host decided I was a wrong'un and locked me out of my own saved files. All my work down the swanee or, at best, behind a wall of strife; all on the whim of an algorithm... Bollox to that.
eh?

For me it´s the opposite way... I don´t mind paying i.e. 150,-€ every 2 years for updates I really want instead of taking a lot for free of what I don´t want/need...

For me quality is more important as money as long as it´s a reasonable price and I am able to "vote" with my money...

I don't think there is anything perfect, anyway there are better solutions.

Avoiding the "chain reaction" is something as company you needs to take care if you decide to be the the police, judge and the executioner, otherwise we as users we are just giving money away and hoping for the best. Not a good solution imo, so i started to avoid it and to find alternatives, and Reaper was mine coming from FL if we talk about daws.

I don’t mind the way Ableton deals with it.
They allow 2 activations but, anytime I needed more, it was no problem at all. I’m happy with the updates in terms of content and prices.
Reaper is excellent.
I like the way Bitwig and Studio One deals with it by giving the option to reset the activations and that’s better than Ableton because is controllable.
Once we get to know the company behavior, at any point in time, it’s our responsibility to stay or move on regardless of the potential loss. They are not going to change and I don’t want to be part of the freedom fighters to make them change.
I have better things and fights to do. :box:

That’s what I do with Ableton, which is close to perfection for me.

I may be a staunch supporter of Linux and Serial/key file protection schemes, but to be very clear, I am also very much in support of the developer. I have purchased Reaper license upgrades three times so far (every time an upgrade came out, since I first moved to Reaper). I have no problem with paying for upgrades, and I highly encourage people to do so to support their developers of choice. Just because I refuse to purchase products with challenge/response protection doesn't mean I'm not willing to shell out money to those developers that I personally support. :D
Vendor‑Dependent Copy Protection: Customers lose. Pirates win.
(Also: I'm Accused of lying about Linux—it boots, runs my pro audio workflow, stays stable, updates--though yearly dismissed as “niche”. Yet I'm the deluded one.)
