What are your thoughts on Symbolic Sounds Kyma 7 in 2019?

The other hard bit of this has been about figuring out whether general-purpose computers are really comparable to having no OS on Motorola DSPs. Which is quite technical topic.
But since one can make a general-purpose computer go < 5 ms I/O latencies and certainly run many similar effects, then there's some room.
There used to be a belief that one couldn't implement big real-time additive synthesis on a computer with a big OS. Which was supported by the fact how few oscillators additive synths handle on PCs vs on the Kyma. I think a big issue of this is however how the control over the partials is implemented.

There was also the valid idea earlier in this thread by someone, which is that with nowadays VSTs you can already make pretty extensive music. A large amount of the population will not be served by Kyma, even if they could use it. They're served by Reaktor, Eventide, GRM Tools, Melodyne, ...

It’s called supercollider , it’s difficult but extremely rewarding if you bite the bullet .soundmodel wrote: Mon Aug 28, 2023 4:56 am
I think there should be a FOSS alternative, if not for other than access and longevity. With free licenses around,
It’s the most amazing piece of open source software and sounds spectaculair .
Edit: supercollider is of course not a foss clone of kyma , if that is what you meant .

mainly copied Vegas for audio at the start, but they'd be idiots not to learn from what others have done.whyterabbyt wrote: Mon Aug 28, 2023 3:07 pmftfysoundmodel wrote: Mon Aug 28, 2023 2:44 pm What I mean is that there's a reason why Reaper is so similar to other DAWs for example, because it copied them.

It's is a good comparison for end-users, but other than perhaps giving the right to the sound output creations, it's not a viable platform for 3rd party developers due to GPL.gentleclockdivider wrote: Mon Aug 28, 2023 11:24 pmIt’s called supercollider , it’s difficult but extremely rewarding if you bite the bullet .soundmodel wrote: Mon Aug 28, 2023 4:56 am

As it says:
"providing a framework for acoustic research, algorithmic music, interactive programming and live coding.". But it's not for proprietary module development.
Maybe https://github.com/SeesePlusPlus/soundpipe or Csound with LGPL
There are also quite many of such frameworks, so again compiling a Kyma requires looking at different places.
The issue I'm also describing is the same as what a plug-in writer for JUCE faces. A plug-in writer has not much interest in starting to write the framework, when he/she is just interested in writing a plug-in.
I also think very few people are genuinely interested in releasing really good plug-ins on GPL platforms.

Neil also made a video showing how he fully integrated a Roland JP-80 with this DAW.

No but LGPL and BSD/MIT are also ideas about FOSS.whyterabbyt wrote: Tue Aug 29, 2023 7:28 am...the sound of goalposts on the march....soundmodel wrote: Tue Aug 29, 2023 2:01 amit's not a viable platform for 3rd party developers due to GPL.
Actually, to me Supercollider feels like an inverse proprietary software, because I can own the sound I make, but I cannot own the software.
