I have had UAD (via pci then pci-e) on my pc since 2005 but didn't have one on my macbook pro till I bought a new macbook pro and used a native 1176 for some projects whilst I was traveling. My clients who were not musicians (ad agency) had them rejected by their client, said they sounded different, not up to my usual standard. I bought a satellite uad for my macbook pro a few days later, and went back and used my uad plugins, especially the 1176 and they were approved.
Lesson Learned.
Never going without UAD again .

Any other thoughts on how they stack up against TrackComp? I don't mind the UI but am still getting to know the character and strong/weak points of those models.

UA plugins are the closest to the real thing than any other plugin I've ever heard. While the real thing is a league above. UA plugins can compete with copycats, like the Klark, Warm, etc. For me this is good enough.

Hmm, this is really strange. As if your clients could here any difference.

They did is my exactly point.
I could hear the difference of course.
But I was very surprised that they could too. These were clients I had had for years so maybe they got accustomed to what the 1176 did to the voices.

Yeah, I kinda figured that out after a few reads. But what I’m still confused about is which 1176 model, exactly, is so poorly designed that it would ruin a whole mix in such an obvious way.

Further, I’m confused how the non-musician client could so clearly hear this when they listened to it, but you couldn’t when you were creating it.

Well it is an ad, so they are mostly focused on the main voice over.. that is the key, and for a big brand like that, they had a 'spokesperson' main voice over, whose voice would appear at some point in 99% of their ads I did, so if that voice changes, they will notice.

I am actually not near my setup now so I don't remember for sure but I think it is the AE I use most of the time.

I also have permanently strapped across my mix buss one of UAD tapes, but I am not sure they would have noticed that missing.

Btw I could clearly hear it, (I said I couldn't?) I was surprised they could.
I think it was ikmultimedia. Its been 8 years so the best I can say was I think.

When I bought through Audiodeluxe, I got a redeem code via email.
Then I had to redeem it at the UA site.
I don't think it was connected to my email, so it's just a redeem code that can be sold.

Speaking of 1176's and Audio Deluxe, do not overlook the Overloud Comp76 that also just went on sale on that site, cheaper than the UAD too.

Quite unfortunate timing for them as it will probably be completely overshadowed by the UAD sale, but I'm just gonna say... Overloud are just quietly one of the best around. Their LA2A/3A is supreme and held up best in a vs hardware comparison I saw.

Yeah - I generally prefer Overloud over UAD, and the 1176 is no different. I purchased the Overloud compressors instead of UAD.

Becoming annoyed at UAD pricing games. They look more and more like a other PA or Waves.
