I'm interested in experimenting (30 years too late). I'm sure there are many places that host free breakbeats. But can anyone recommend good quality sources thereof. Not looking for samples or loops that contain melodic fragments either, just beats. Thanks

well a breakbeat, is really just a drum loop, like any other.
take any acoustic drum loop you have, load in sampler, then slice it at the transients.
now you have your broken beat.
then you rearrange/add/remove the slices, to get the sound you are thinking of as "breakbeats".
throw in some filters and saturation, bobs yer aunties feller.

I understand that I just don't have any loops. I don't normally work with them.

Years ago I was in the same position, Dave Clarke got me into electro/ breakbeat
In my opinion your better off making your own I find ableton impulse is really good for me, and I don't need maschine or 3rd party vst , let me see if I can sort you out

I do make my own drum parts and will continue to do so, almost exclusively using Linn samples, 909, early synth drum sounds, and TAL Sampler (which has a ton of sounds), and some ludwig kit samples. Most of the percussion I write is simple. But I'm not big on resamplng because it's a bit of a chore IMO. I could create my own breaks from those parts but I never felt compelled to do so as the parts are too simple

Sample Magic and Zenhiser do good quality breaks packs.
Fight Apathy or don't.

Thanks. THe music radar links seem pretty good so far. Given their nature I don't think you're going to need too many anway. The rest is up to me: chopping stuff up which I've always enjoyed doing (why i want to experiment) and processing.

This.
I used to have a shitload of breaks and lost them a few years back, but found all of them and more at Looperman. Decent quality too, most of them. Enough to keep you going for ages.
