The case of the malfunctioning multi monitor setup.

I’ve been having an intractable issue involving some plugins and how they malfunction on my system. It first started when I added a third small monitor to my setup. The issue was, some plugins, like those from Melda Productions, and some IK Multimedia will have their UI windows spawn fine, and if I move the window to the next monitor, it’s fine, but if I closes it on the new window and reopen it, the window shows up blank and won’t close and eventually just crashes. I figured it was the super old video card I had, and I just learned to make sure my plugin windows were shut down on the monitor they spawned on. I’m using Bitwig, btw. 4.4.10, but I tried the demo of the latest and it’s the same.

Recently my work bought me a larger monitor, so I figured I’d go down to a two monitor setup again. Now the problem was worse. The UI windows would just show up blank. I figured it was time to toss that old video card and get something that wasn’t made for Windows Vista, so I picked up an Nvidia GTX 1660 Super. Nothing spectacular, but it seemed decent. The problem persists.

I’ve tried everything. Making sure everything’s at 100% magnification. Drivers installed fresh from Nvidia, clean install. If I switch Bitwig to single monitor mode, everything’s fine, but I still can’t move a plugin window to the second monitor and close it there.

I don’t get it. Bitwig says they can’t replicate it. Melda and IK haven’t responded. My i9 3.5 system’s got plenty of RAM (32 gig). Nice 4 tb solid state drive. There’s really nothing exotic about my setup, so I can’t imagine it’s unique to me.

If all fails, install Windows from scratch and do some tweaks.

It is to reinstall, but first uninstall with DDU.

Those old nvidia cards work better with old drivers. I remember looking for the 10'th version which was praised in forums. I think that is your best bet. Look online at geek forums; talking of the best and most stable driver for your card. Often it can even reduce temps by having the best driver.

Like pictus said, use ddu to remove your old driver. Something to also consider too is a high quality hdmi cord designed for your resolution. Cheap cords can cause issues. I would have to find one specifically for 4k, and with the right hdmi version # to enable hdr mode, otherwise hdr mode in windows just turns on and off intermittently.

As for the HDMI cable, I’m not using HDMI at all. I’m using DisplayPort for the new one and DVI for the old one. Could this be an issue?

No, displayport have less drivers; the feed of data is much more direct. hdmi was designed to help stop piracy with bluray. there's a chip on both ends which causes some slip. nvidia and amd were also maniacal about preventing bluray piracy in those days. Now with netflix, what's the point I guess. I don't really want to watch movies very often though.

lol, yeah even my rtx 2060s is considered old. got it for 270 cad new; so am not complaining. hot card, needs a liquid cooler amongst other things.

It could be anything, but it doesn't look like a cable issue to me.

Thanks for all the help, but installing fresh drivers after DDU didn't fix my issue. I have no idea what the issue is, but for now I'm going to downsize my monitor and see if that makes things right.

I’m going to try and see if I can run Bigwig in two screen mode on a single monitor. If that works, I can get a wide screen and be done with it. I don’t really need two monitors as long as I can have both of Bitwig’s windows open.

So, this does actually work. It's a tad unwieldly, but not too bad. As long as I keep Bitwig on one monitor, I can easily move the plugin window to my second monitor, and like before, as long as I move it back before I close it, everything's fine.

Sick, thanks. I used to be an operatic when I was young; and a choir goer (Roman Catholic); but I let my voice go. It's always pretty pathetic to hear my own voice now. Glad I'm quitting smoking. At least I can shake my head using really good gear lol.

Would definitely need an Apollo x6 though; to accommodate a band. Maybe an x8. Sigh hefty bill
