what will I be missing out on if I go with this lite version. I don't think I need the full blown pro setup yet.

I've been using Cubase 3.7 for a long time now.

I kinda searched the forums a bit and couldn't find much talk about SE.

Not much. It's pretty damn capable for a $99 program. If you need more, then upgrade.

True, it's not mentioned much, even on cubase.net forum. I suppose most people can afford SX 3.

Cubase SE is based on the Cubase 1 SX engine. It actually outperforms most functions of the less useful and vastly more expensive Cubase VST 5.1.

No dongles, reasonable performance but still a clickfest. Don't rule out Cakewalk Home Studio 2004 at a similar price.

Mind explaining this blue dongle I have hanging off of my PC so I can run Cubase SE? If it's just my imagination, I'll take it off then.

I remember when the Studio Case came out, there was mention of a dongle in one of the reviews.

Maybe as a standalone product, they couldn't meet the $99 or so price point if they had to pay $5, 10, $20, or whatever per copy for a dongle?

I'm using Cubase SE for nearly a year now, and mine also definately has a dongle as I bought the Studio Case Edition.
I think as the first professional sequencer for me it was the right choice because Cubase SL and SX have overwhelming features and need more time to work things out. And you can do MANY things in Cubase SE.
When you have worked some time with SE and you need more features you can easiliy upgrade to SX and you know the program basics already (I think I will upgrade this year...).
And when Cubase isn't your cup of tea then with the SE version the loss of money is not so huge as with SX.

When you look for other sequencers in the 100$ price range I think FL Studio and Tracktion are good choices but I only tested the demo versions of these (which are fine) but for me the choice is Cubase.

So in FL Studio can you program drums into a drum editor window just like in Cubase?

This is how I'm used to working and I don't want to have to change that.

As I said I just tried the demo of FL Studio but I know that many people love the FL drum editor and even use it inside Cubase because it is better/easier (you can use FL Studio inside Cubase as an VST).
Maybe some FL users can post their opinions on this one...

Anyway, you can download the FL Demo from www.flstudio.com and try it for yourself!
