I've heard this from amp builders too. Sometimes what you think should sound great, doesn't, and vice versa. I was imagining some semi-modular models with kind of insert points for the tone stack, tuned to work with each other. But yeah, that may be easier said than done in practice.
and you can also get sounds that would be (nigh) impossible to achieve with a real tube-amp.
