I'm guessing hardware would be superior w/ an eventide or good guitar pedal or something but I'm curious which fx plugins do feedback the best? Obvs. delays would be the first consideration but what daws for that matter can do feedback routing within themselves? I've heard ableton is capable of that. Blue Cat has one that can route feedback. My criteria is basically the most detailed best sounding feedback/resonance.
I like Echoboys, ohmboyz is pretty good too. What's your fave fx feedback plugins and are there advantages to routing the inputs/outputs to achieve feedback loops w/ in the daw itself? I occasionally automate feedback manually so it's not an entirely idle curiosity. (Although manually automate is a contradiction of a term, I mean write in automation manualluy really)
Or is hardware worth the investment when it comes to best feedback? Or is all feedback all the same to you?

If you want feedback in software, use a modular environment. Feedback in Softube Modular sounds quite good. There's an FX version.

Excalibur could do this, same as some Arturia Delays, Softube Acoustic Feedback. In the end of the day you might not regret getting a hardware device instead though. You can actually do feedback routing in Cockos Reaper (Project settings, allow feedback in routing). I would also say Blue Cat Audio's Late Replies is worth a look. Also u-he's MFM2 (More Feedback Machine). Lastly Arturia's Delay plugin Eternity has some interesting feedback settings.

This one came out recently, it’s an universal AS Mac and iOS app:

It’s a no-input mixer with seven channels and fx slots, capable of some nasty noise. Lots of fun!
But if you own Live, it’s quite easy to create feedback loops. Slap some effects on it and off you go.

Most feedback in software is lame, but as has been said, Softube Modular does a pretty good job, as does Reaktor Blocks. I’ve not used them as effects, though, just as part of modular instrument patches.
In terms of hardware, DSI/Sequential synths that have it are awesome. Nothing sounds like my Prophet 12 when messing with the feedback. Sounds like it’s being ripped apart at the seams. Plus there’s a tuning parameter. Crazy times. On a budget, the Bass Station 2 using the headphone out into the audio in works great. Any synth that has this can generally get some great results. Most software just sounds like they slipped a drive circuit in.

Unfortunately I kinda suspected that'd be the case. I'm generally fine w/ itb stuff but feedback is one of those things that I'd like to have physically running through outboard. Feedback has always been so fascinating to me, you put an amp next to another amp and this other third sound builds up out of nowhere it's so mysterious.

Bluecat connect can be used as a feedback generator.
Put one instance before the plugin you want to feedback and set it to receive and one after and set it to send
You can adjust the level of feedback with the receive level on the receiving plugin.
