Maybe all of us loaners could collab on a good 909 hat based track.

It's all about the dynamics. 808 hats, acoustic hats, and various other electronic hats don't have enough "punch" dynamically to support the ever important 8th downbeat in a dance groove. Most hats have a smooth attack envelope, the 909 is more of a "hit," which is why it supports a dance groove so well. If you wan't something more original, you can put some other kind of hat through a decent compressor and let some of the attack through. You'll need to twiddle eqs as well, especially if using 808s. You'll hear that a lot in more organic sounding house music.
To me it seems like most dance producers recently have been steering away from raw 909 hats.

Whenever I do anything even vaguely dance-related, I always gravitate back to 909 hats. I don't want to, I know I shouldn't but I can't help it. Dunno if we're just indictrinated (that's a bit 'Allo 'Allo...I meant indoctrinininated I think.)
I tried 606s, 808s, Alesises's, real ones, my own synthesiezed ones....just can't kick the habit. Do I need to see a counsellor d'you think?

well if you pay CLOSE attention then you'll realise that pure 909 hats are indeed dead. Listen to QUALITY house, dance or trance these days and you'll find open hats that sound SIMILAR to 909 (they possibly are 909 samples) but, they're used in less obvious way. I mean.. compare axwell's open hats to dj bobo's. Even though the sound is essentially the same... today's 909 sound sounds more souped up and more tweaked.. and .. hmm BETTER sounding then all those years ago. It's amazing though how effective it can be. It's used from pop, to dance, trance, hard house, techno, hardcore, progressive... and everything in between.. and it's very versatile... Long live the 909 hats!!!!

It occured to me I didn't even have any 909 hat samples on my hard drive. Heh.
