I am setting up a website whereby I want to give people the option of either downloading the mp3 or streaming audio.

Anybody got any advice on the best way to do this with Frontpage 2003.

Check this site out for all you could need to know about stream of audio. Phew! there is a lot to it from the servers perspective :O)

You can try Flash Voice Buttons. It's the most powerful tool.

If you have WinAmp, you can create them quickly and easily.

This is how I do it:
Upload your mp3 to your space.
Open up WinAmp.
Open up the Playlist Editor.
Go to File - New Playlist.
Type in the URL of your track.
Save Playlist (I tend to press play first to make sure the file's loaded ok).
This has been now saved as a .m3u file type.

Upload this to your site (I put mine in a seperate 'streams' folder) and point your 'play' button or text to this m3u file in it's appropriate location.

Alternatively, you can simply type the address into a text doc and save as a .m3u - that also works but I find WinAmp does all the donkey work for you.

No need for expensive software or anything like that.

WinAmp's free.

Check my site (clicky my siggy) - see all those 'play' options?
They work, don't they?
All created in this manner.
Simple when you know how.

yep glassback is right

copy the url of the .mp3 file into a blank .txt file and rename it to song.m3u ...

then upload this to your site, and it will stream

the only problem is, it will only work in 'hifi' stream for fast broadband connections, ur 56k users won't be able to stream

56k modem streams are low sound quality and can be acheived by icecast, or shoutcast, but not so essential these days in widespread broadband..

so what the .m3u text is really, the entire mp3 gets downloaded by each person into their temp folders and it plays like a regular mp3 (technically, not 'streaming' i guess but same effect)

Yes, that is a bit of a drawback. I wondered though - if I was to upload a lofi version and do a playlist for that, would that still be unobtainable to dial-up users? Or would it actually work? Might try it.
OK, who do I know who's on dial-up and is up for a wee bit of experimentin'?

my guess is - >

if u lofi quality the mp3, then the size is smaller, so it still has to buffer ... but because its smaller .. will 'work' for 56k

i could have just made that up though

upload two versions of the track, one at a hi-fi bitrate and one at 24kbps mono. make two seperate m3u files. one for the hi-fi version and one for the lo-fi version. this will work.

This is what I used to do, back in the day - now I just have high-quality stuff and hope for the best, although (being on dialup myself) I think I might go back to hifi/lofi versions of the same tune..

thats exactly why i do 40 min tracks at 196 kbps dont want the bloody riffraff havin it too easy
