Very nice, one of my favorites of yours.
I wish there was more "sparse" music like this.
There is something to be said by simplicity and good sound.

I think this piece has 6 synth instances, although a couple of them are duplicated in the left and right channels, giving 8 different sources. The next track only contains 4 instrument tracks, but probably sounds less sparse, due to the patches used.

The music/writing for this was unplanned. I sat down with the DAW and said "what can I do with these Absynth sounds?" The guitar-like synth was the only deliberate addition.

The handling of reverb is especially satisfying. Then, the high end particularly is sharp but not grating.
- maybe saying "ambient" promotes an expectation of sleepytime mellow or like yez ate three gummies (per the one comment). I found it something to pay attention to (and I don't care for the label much anyway) so Not Ambient (confer Eno in Music for Airports and the kind of original point ie., you don't so much listen to it but let it wash over you). But labels are for record store bins /albeit that's pretty much history now/ anyhow. It's musical storytelling, isn't it.

- unmistakably Absynth from the get-go. Are you doing three instances, as one for each channel? Anyway there's distinctly 3 fields in the stereoness, I mean as opposed to a wash. I wished it were continued in development if only for 3 outputs for the 3 channels. It still works here on the ARM system-on-chip (under Rosetta 2) despite NI putting the red X mark against, on that page.

Nice mix of timbres, a lovely faint ominous tone here and there I agree, managed to keep my interest and I have a 30 second attention span (lolol!).

Drambient? Hmmm, never heard of it but I guess it's OK. Now if it were called Future Drambient, it would be a deal breaker.

I think I've seen Drambient mentioned, although I'm not really sure it's a thing.

Comparing the original and the new tracks at 1:14, I definitely prefer the new one. Less feedback-like harshness in the sounds. A big improvement IMO.

Sadly, I think Shimmer is Windows/MacOS only

Not a problem. I've been using a Mac Mini M1 (MacOS) for some time now. I switched after some intense frustration trying to bring my Linux desktop up to date. An unsupported video card broke the deal, and at the same time a friend suggested I look at the Mac instead. I did. I'm not happy with Apple but the machine is a wonder, I'm now able to make much larger patches in VCV Rack, plus I have access to a number of platform-limited music and sound applications. I'm still running Linux here, it's just not my main audio production platform anymore.

Shimmer is capable of some astounding harmonic effects, but recently I've been using some more "natural" settings, and I'm quite pleased with the results. I think it's great value.

I was using Linux from '98 until 2-3 years ago, but for work, and not music production. My main problem relating to OS updates was related to hardware support (new video, audio or network interfaces). It would often take the OS 18-24 months to add support for new devices, although the RedHat/CentOS projects improved things 15-20 years ago. My main interest these days is the C compiler.

Tyvm. I think it's easier to get things right in these more minimal pieces.

The reverb is Valhalla Shimmer's BlackHole preset. I increased the Hi-Cut slightly but made some cuts to the Hi-Cuts out of one pair of Absynth patches.

"ambient" was the closest genre descriptor that came to mind, but I agree that this may be too dramatic to qualify, although "ambient" does seem to have evolved a lot since the early Eno daze

I have seven instances of Absynth here, although four of them are made up of 2 identical patch pairs, each pair routed separately to left and right. Another sound is made up of a pair of non-matching patches routed separately left and right, and a final instance using conventional stereo.

It's certainly a mainly gloomy piece with a few brighter bits in the second half of the track.
