An ethically strong argument can be made for a licensee of a sample library to not be forced to abide by vendor lock-in, as behooves the incumbent closed library vendor. The underlying issue is actually much closer to right to repair than it is to piracy.
I have collected a vast array of sample sets, in a variety of formats open & proprietary. It should be my right to use those samples in any sampler of my choosing. I may lose 90% of the functionality of a well-constructed Kontakt instrument, but what about old instruments that don't rely heavily on round robins, legato, keyswitching, etc? Unless the EULA prevents me (but why would it?) from converting, it should be my right to use a kontakt sample library that was legally obtained in TAL Sampler or DiscoDSP Bliss, or Sforzando, or any tool of my choosing.
I'm not moving away from Kontakt and not likely to convert more complex modern instruments, but I have a lot of smaller, older, unique libraries that would serve me better in a different sampler that does not have all the overhead and awful third-party library navigation of Kontakt. To paint use of these conversion tools as only serving the interests of piracy completely dismisses legitimate use cases, which can be perfectly ethical.

but i think the rules are more about relevance to the site. than covering the whole of the justice system.

Since ConvertWithMoss now has the same features as kontaktconverter.com I'll leave this bizarre thread. Who would want to use the shady pay version when we now, thanks to Moss, can convert for free?
Take care everybody!

but it is true too.
Idiotic rhymes aside, this is the kind of slippery slope that will actually come to fruition. Once you allow thievery, you must allow thievery from the thieves, and that will quickly descend into all-out barbarism.

Proprietary file formats cannot be legally protected and reverse engineering them for the purpose of interoperability (ability to use samples and patches in a different samplers, to translate it bluntly for this case) is fully allowed by IP laws. A file format is not protectable intellectual property and that much has been established. The same is true for network protocols and if it was gray before, Microsoft has "won" all the court precedents for this chasing the black box reimplementers like Samba and OpenOffice - and lost.
Reverse engineering the software to gain insight into the file format is actually not outright forbidden but a gray area, and interoperability is actually the fair use / safe harbor in the matter.
From what I gathered, disassembling binaries for this is still a no no and will get you in trouble, but a more liberal use of "reverse engineering" like using original software to generate files and test the files is not enforceable and isn't protected by courts.
Furthermore, it was the EU courts and legislative institutions that spearheaded these decisions, and last I checked, NI were a company operating and registered in a European country bound by (and in many cases championing) EU directives.

Is this thing on? It seems to have been a while since someone posted in this thread. Is this tool still being looked after?
Anyway, Would it be difficult to make the tool so it could, for example, convert Decent Sampler libraries to Kontakt, say, version 5?

They posted sometime in July or August 2024 that it was being discontinued, without any further information or reason, but I suspect they received a cease and desist from NI.ZCatcher wrote: Sun Sep 01, 2024 8:43 pm I'm looking for it a year later in Sept 2024 and the site appears to be parked.
I was able to download it via the wayback machine, but I haven't tested it yet.
