Try Acustica Audio Lemon, heavy on the CPU but one of the best delays ITB, I can get pretty much in close enough territories to not miss BIM.
What’s the latency on Lemon?

I know I tried it after seeing bmanic rave about it.

It is extremely nice, but yeah, CPU heavy and I thought I remembered extreme latency, maybe more that Soundtoys Primal Tap?
4592 samples (104.1ms) according to Live, pretty high. There should be a zero latency version but I always delete these as I don't use them.

Not far from Primal Tap's 92ms.

I have plenty of delay options but will likely consider Lemon in a November sale, although I have a short black Friday shopping list already.

This thread did inspire me to take a closer at the uniqueness of different plugins. I just removed the IK Tape Echo in favor of Softube's Tape Echoes. Different era/flavor of modeled hardware but all lovely goodness.

Well go for it if the price is good. My email records show that Lemon's price was 37 euro after my loyalty discount. Recently sold most of my AA stuff but Lemon is a keeper. :)
Softube's Tape Echoes is lovely, the Tube Delay too, got it last month for 10 euro. :D

Just out of curiosity do you use Lemon on send? If on insert, what DAW do you use where that much latency is always accurately compensated?

Can Lemon do ping pong?

I can’t even find a page for Lemon on Acustica’s site.

Yes, Lemon can do ping pong. I am using it on insert but latency is rarely a problem to me as I don't create tracks, I do sound design work mostly and processing individual stems most of the time.

Another great delay that can do low bit depth and other stuff isn't talked about a lot is Klevgrand's Modley.

It's essentially a delay where you can put effects before and after the delay as well as in the actual feedback path of the delay itself.

There's a pretty comprehensive list of effects too. Filters, Chorus, flanging, vibrato, reverb, compression, distortion, saturation, pitch shift, tremolo, stereo wideners, bit and sample reduction etc.

You can even put delay inside the delay!

Each effect is also not limited to one use. You could have 12 compressors if you want, for instance.

It also has a seperate master modulator and has the usual excellent UI that Klevgrand has.

So putting a compressor before and after the delay with a bit reducer after the delay or in the feedback loop would get you close to something like a PCM 42.

For a PCM 42, there’s also this: https://www.pspaudioware.com/products/lexicon-psp-42

I haven’t tried it, but I would be curious to give this one a go.

Post

You can also use the melda production stuff to make some extremely jacked up feedback paths with all types of effects at the input and output and modulation as well. I'd imagine one could get damn close to the exact signal path of this OTO delay in MXXX. It is very good for things like this if you are into their interface style.
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.

So I’ve put my hands on to U-he Colour Copy. It does not sound like the BIM (since it doesn’t emulate a digital delay) but I have to say it is by far the best sounding plugin delay and possibly sounds the closest to BIM in terms of 3D image and the way the modulation sounds. Unless I’m tripping in the honeymoon period.

The only thing is I don’t know if any of the plugin doctors lurking around have made aliasing tests. I have seen comments on Valhalla Delay that it doesn’t alias at all in neither of the modes. I wonder if Colour Copy holds up to it.

Post

Just bought u-he's MFM2 at 50% off and I can say that it does what Lemon does and much more! And it's much lighter and faster/responsive. The closest plugin to BIM imo.
Still, I will keep Lemon. ;)

Soniccharge Permut8. 12bits. Great filter. More than a delay.
