Yeah, Coil is weird. There used to be a radio show here called "dark circles" and they used to play all kinds of dark goth kinda stuff.
One time I heard a band called Clairvoyant, that is not quite as dark and gritty, that I like a lot. The singer has a pretty voice too.

Coil have been through many phases since their inception in 1982. I would recommend 'Horse Rotorvator' as a good starting point for their 80's work, and the two volumes of 'Musick to Play in the Dark' for the recent phase. But it's all good. Many strange thoughts and feelings to be gleaned. It certainly isn't 'Goth' though, even though they have some admirers in those quarters. They've always been very difficult to pigeonhole with genre tags due to the constant shapeshifting.

How bizarre.
I was just watching and listening to that coil thing in the other thread and was just thinking
"I remember my mate being into these in the 80's - I always loved what he played but never got round to buying any. I wonder what's the best album to get? I know - I'll ask in KvR."
Then I saw this thread.
So 'Horse Rotorvator' or 'Musick to Play in the Dark' then?
Duly noted.

Their manufacturer/distributor, World Serpent, went under this year, so if you see anything, snap it up, because it might be out of print for awhile. There are a variety of online indie distros with stock for the time being.vurt wrote: very hard to find any of the earlier stuff at the mo,even on amazon prices can be silly

Snatch up anything you can because Coil is no more. Band member John Balance passed away back in November and with that, the band is no longer.
A brilliant band that never got enough credit.
