I'm waiting. Still on Monterey. Unless the next iteration of Logic is a game changer, I'm good for now.
Also, there's some firmware update that my RME FF802 will need, so 'd have to make sure that's set up.

I don't really understand that.

Can anybody point me to any compatibility issue on the last .... say 10 years after an OS update?
(of course we need to put aside the incompatibility issue to the movement to Apple Silicon and 64bits only which is not an OS upgrade but a full shift of technology).

I am working in a Bank which is in the top 10 in the world, and 10th of thousands of servers are administrated.
They have one rule, as soon as an update is there. Install it.

This is due to the fact that the security risk is considered much more serious than an incompatilibty risk.
My bank does that and all the market does that so I suppose they are not totally stupid.

Now I am aware that transposing the example of servers administration to music making laptop is a very far stretch... But really, is there such case as VST incompatibility issues in modern age ???

Or is everybody dreaming about it ?

I upgraded right away from Ventura to Sonoma because I had a Ventura bug that caused audio skipping in youtube, didn't really seem to affect any DAW I used but you never know.

Sonoma works OK, but right away:
1- in Digital Performer with U-He plugins, Hive crashes on AU check and passes VST3, and Diva crashes VST3 check and passes AU. U-He say it's likely on their side.
2- In DP proper the Menu bar is hosed, it takes a double click to open the Menu item.

Within a day or so I already found two bugs, one that could potentially prevent plugins from loading properly in your songs. So yes, upgrading the OS is always a risk, especially because of the changes in security that happen that can mess with access to different parts of the OS.

Looks more like a digital Performer issue no?
Hive 2 and Diva work like a charm in any OS version on my computer with Bitwig.
Are you on Intel?

You specifically said:

When a plugin or DAW doesn't work properly after an update, that is a compatibility issue.

I mentioned previously there seemed to be a bug with certain audio drivers and Ventura, my particular small audio gaps issue was minor compared to what other people experienced with Ventura, and was subsequently fixed in Sonoma.

In fact there is no real way we can know whether the menu item bug in DP is specifically MOTU's fault or Apples. We have some anecdotal proof that the audio driver bug some were experiencing in Ventura was due to the OS, since it was also solved by an OS not driver update. We also have the word of a U-He support person that the bug in Sonoma with U-He plugins is probably due to U-He according to them.

You should look up the initial release of Audio Units. Apple sent out specs for developers but then subsequently tweaked the code to fit quirks in Logic Pro, so other adopters of AU like Digital Performer who strictly followed the specs Apple sent out had major issues.

I also own Bitwig, I've experienced bugs with Bitwig, it's not immune. I'm not sure what's going on here? You said something patently falsifiable, and I've provided probably a molehill in terms of evidence that you might be wrong in your thought that OS updates haven't broken anything besides Intel/Apple Silicon issues. A very good friend of mine was head QA at Apple for decades, there are always OS bugs, it's not getting better, because they always add new features.

Papen’s Vecto, Quad, BIT, and Go2, are crashing Logic for me. Halion 7 has a weird GUI bug when you first load it where you have to hover your mouse over the screen to make the gui populate, then you can use it as normal. Logic is also not completely loading projects where plugins are missing - it breaks on the “this plugin is missing from your system screen” then it freezes. you have to force quit Logic and re-open the project, THEN it loads. That’s what’s happening to me at least - I’m on a Mac mini m2 Pro with a clean installation of Sonoma.

No deal breakers though - my most used non native synths load fine. PG-8X and Poly-Ana are working great. Was a little hesitant to upgrade to silicon because those synths are non-native. However no issues to report there. All my stuff running on Sonoma is good to go - Omnisphere, Spire, ANA2, Serum, eventide, Softube, Soundtoys, TC Elecronic, UAD, Plugin Alliance, NI. So far so good. Volt 276 is running fine, my Unitor and MT4s still work (had to download latest 2022 driver though).

Oh I am very sure of that.
And thank you also for pointing me to the bugs you experienced.
Bitwig has a big for me even now, when I am plugin my dac to my laptop I need to go to setting, it doesn't recognise it immediately.

In the context of our discussion, what I wanted to know was if the bugs encountered where blockers or just small suis with workarounds. In your case you seems to have workarounds.
To me I am not expecting major bugs that would be blocker after a release. Because all the major user cases are tested.
The only exception to that is the one you mentioned, with the security changes. If a plug in takes some shortcuts or not coded as part standards, a version upgrade can heal it for a while indeed.

That's weird for Rob Papen, i just checked again, they work absolutely great on my mbp m2 pro with bitwig.
I use them as VST3 if it helps.

Not sure what’s going on here - using the AUs in Logic. The only Papen AU that works for me from the ones I mentioned is Predator 3.

Weird that banking software puts different demands on the OS than audio/video software 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, I’ve heard that Finder is working great under Sonoma.
I lost my heart in Cap de Creus

Anyone using Sonoma with an Apogee Quartet? Apogee announced several newer interfaces are compatible but hasn’t said anything about the Quartet yet. My guess is they just haven’t gotten around to testing it yet.

Edit: they updated the post and now it says “all Apogee gear” is compatible:

You know COBOL--write once, it will follow you around for eternity!

I was so happy when the Finder was finally rewritten in Cocoa. I thought it would be a panacea for all the issues. Nope. Still same issues, plus even more issues! Yay! You get an issue! And you get an issue! You all get issues!

What I have noticed is that when Apple fixes bugs in the OS, they never really bother to mention it, so all those workarounds that programmers put in place suddenly break. And the workarounds were not documented as they thought this was how the OS was supposed too work. Unfortunately, their horrible documentation is beyond horrible. I hate to admit it, but Microsoft docs are light-years ahead in usability.

Deprecations are really a non-issue as you get plenty of weaning for those.

Anyway, you should always have a complete backup ready to go if you have to roll back, i usually have a sacrificial victim computer ready to take one for the team and test the latest and greatest.

I'm hoping that with 64-bit done and ARM done and Metal done, we can all kick back for a few years and enjoy the Grand Unification of iOS and macOS that is coming. That will be interesting to see.
I started on Logic 5 with a PowerBook G4 550Mhz. I now have a MacBook Air M1 and it's ~165x faster! So, why is my music not proportionally better? :(

Anyone running a RME USB interface with Sonoma (Fireface)?

Post

someone here using Fireface 800 on Sonoma, not sure about USB.

I have a Babyface, I'll wait a few updates and then venture into sonoma

with my 500 or so plugins in tow :scared:

I really like the new "click wallpaper to reveal desktop" feature. Though I'm not too keen on the new Sonoma wallpaper theme. So far those are the only differences I can tell. I guess there's some widgets.
