Welcome to the the One Synth Challenge:
It's a friendly music competition where you can win cool prizes but most importantly, meet amazing musicians, and learn a lot about mixing, sound design, and more!





Special Rule:
Wavetables are allowed, but imported tables should not be used for straight sample playback i.e. to replicate recorded instruments or vocal phrases directly, but rather to synthesise, morph and mangle single cycle waveforms.

So to clarify on the special rule: we can use custom wavetables, as long as they are wavetables (ie specifically meant to be used that way)?

We can use our own wave tables, but not play them as samples.

I usually interpret the rule about playing third-party wavetables like this: you can make a drum out of a guitar wavetable and you can make a guitar out of a drum wavetable, but you can't make a guitar out of a guitar wavetable and a drum out of a drum one!

The point is to allow your own wavetables, whilst not allowing sampling playback i.e. recorded instruments, vocal performances etc. This challenge is about synthesis, and the wavetable in this instance is the oscillator source for synthesising your sounds.

And I have already two question - I'm not able to find a manual for the synth. I would look up two things ...
1.) How is the gate fx supposed to be used? If I switch it on, no sound is coming out of the synth ... The usual trial-and-error didn't get me anywhere.
2.) What is the spec for custom wavetables? Is it 2048 samples per wavetable slot like for Tone2s Icarus 2 Synth? Or can I just drop an arbitrary sample into the synth and it's gonna be magically treated to become a wavetable?

1) The trancegate effect should open and close based on the pattern you draw below. If it's all black, you'll hear nothing. Turn on individual steps and then you should hear the audio turning on and off.

2) If there is Serum formatted metadata in the Wavetable, it will use the correct size. Otherwise a dialog will pop up asking you to specify the size - 256, 512, 1024 or 2048. If you don't see that, make sure you have the latest version - 1.0.6

I was thinking about keeping these to myself as my own secret weapon, but decided it wouldn't be fair (even if nobody else uses them):

A couple of years ago, I was commissioned to make a Vital preset pack, which would not only have 50 original presets, but they'd be made using 50 original wavetables: created using single-cycle waves sorted by frequency and interpolated in Serum; but further made into full-frame wavetables this month using Phase Plant so the Wavetable synth can scan through them as intended.



Originally, the commissioner wanted to put it together with other sound designers; but due to a general lack of interest in the project, nobody's was released. But I liked my own wavetables enough to keep using them, and I'd like to share at least the wavetable-half of that project with you guys for use this month.

Enjoying this synth atm.

Still a little rough around the edges though,
I can report that the second oscillator won't reopen correctly a custom wavetable and will put the default one instead. Everything works ok until I close and reopen my DAW. (Reaper, win10...)
