The earliest occurrance of this sample I can find, is from Bobby Brown's Rock Witch'a.. It was all over Walter Afanasieff's early 90's productions (Mariah Carey, Kenny G etc) and can be heard occasionally in some Asian Pop songs.
Do you recognize it from any drum machines or sample libraries? Thanks!

Those snares don't sound the same to me. You won't get a definitive answer anyway, as they both sound layered and heavily processed. Likely contenders are the Alesis HR-16 and HR-16B drum machines, layered with themselves and/or live snares or other drum machines. I think I hear a pitched up TR-707 Snare 1 in the Brown track but it's hard to tell.

Sounds gated and reverbed. Could be live drums, and a low-tuned snare.
