Personally, I updated like I said because there were some issues with audio in Ventura, specifically audio glitches that could be traced back to the OS, not the drivers etc. This becomes as transparent as these things ever get with Apple in that updating got rid of noticeable audio glitches in applications like youtube. For other users is was in audio apps like DAWs etc.fisherKing wrote: Tue Oct 03, 2023 5:51 pmgot it, that's your opinion. and nothing in the PDF changes your mind? so it goes....
The fact is Apple rarely announces a list of bugs in the OS that are fixed, so some milquetoast update can actually be a solid game changer for many.

fwiw, i had no audio issues in ventura, running logic, spotify, on youtube, or playing videos, etc.machinesworking wrote: Tue Oct 03, 2023 6:05 pmPersonally, I updated like I said because there were some issues with audio in Ventura, specifically audio glitches that could be traced back to the OS, not the drivers etc. This becomes as transparent as these things ever get with Apple in that updating got rid of noticeable audio glitches in applications like youtube. it's worth remembering that our singular experiences don't speak for everyone... unless, of course, everyone is experiencing those issues.

I was looking forward to this feature, so I could make the EMU Web Tools remote editor into an 'app' in the dock. Turns out it only works with Safari (of course) and Safari of all things still doesn't support the WebMIDI API.. Still have to open up Edge or Chrome to mess with the sampler online if I want to.

Reading the promo page at Apple there was absolutely nothing there to attract me to the OS. I experienced that same glitches on Youtube (and others incl applications local to my machine) issue, and the other showstopping thing (which I cannot confidently assert a single culprit for) so I adopted OS14 in beta (I had done 13.6 beta as well so I'm going to see the beta updates every time). I haven't had the glitches in Youtube since. Aside from that my experience with OS14 is exactly the same as w. OS13.6.
I don't even know what a 'widget' does. I'm not using Launchpad or the other thing; these are not time savers, I know where things are in Finder
. I'm not thrilled about the whole trip of making "MacOS" more and more resemble iOS.
EG: "System Settings" vs System Preferences, the GUI/UX diff is the opposite of an improvement IMO.

i don't care, generally, about 'new features'. i care about what happens under-the-hood, ie how my needed apps (like logic, final cut) work on the OS; how safari works, mail, etc. and in that regard, sonoma is a step forward from ventura... so here, am goodjancivil wrote: Tue Oct 03, 2023 7:10 pm Reading the promo page at Apple there was absolutely nothing there to attract me to the OS. logic & final cut both work well; i can't say 'better' than ventura, but at least, just as good. both have been stable, and i can get my work done.

Like a lot of OS issues, they don't affect everyone. This is true, I mentioned that my particular version of the audio driver bug in Ventura wasn't half as extreme as others were reporting. In all cases updating to Sonoma fixed the issues.fisherKing wrote: Tue Oct 03, 2023 6:08 pmfwiw, i had no audio issues in ventura, running logic, spotify, on youtube, or playing videos, etc.machinesworking wrote: Tue Oct 03, 2023 6:05 pmPersonally, I updated like I said because there were some issues with audio in Ventura, specifically audio glitches that could be traced back to the OS, not the drivers etc. This becomes as transparent as these things ever get with Apple in that updating got rid of noticeable audio glitches in applications like youtube. The conversation was about whether updating the OS could cause issues. Your weird take that my "singular experience" doesn't speak or everyone is just that, a weird take.
OS updates can mess with various DAWs, plugins, and drivers, it generally doesn't affect ALL DAWs, plugins and audio drivers. I shouldn't have to mention this, and I wouldn't invalidate anyones take who gave as much evidence as they could to put perspective on what they're saying.
Sonoma fixes the audio glitches in streaming audio services for me like youtube, but it also brings in some other odd things for me and a few others. My secondary 4K monitor occasionally flickers, as does a few others I know, and in Digital Performer it exposed some issues with the AU of Diva, and a Menu bug appears due to MOTU in DP. This is not true of other DAWs, so some things get exposed by OS updates that are application bugs, and others are OS bugs. Likely updates will solve all of this.

i hear the rest of what you're saying, but stand by my comment about one's 'singular experience' not speaking for everyone. seems to me that that is logical, and not a 'weird take'.machinesworking wrote: Wed Oct 04, 2023 3:51 am The conversation was about whether updating the OS could cause issues. but again, i understand the rest.

There's no need to say that OS or application bugs are a "singular experience", it's invalidating, and frankly it's obvious that all bugs do not affect all people.fisherKing wrote: Wed Oct 04, 2023 11:28 ami hear the rest of what you're saying, but stand by my comment about one's 'singular experience' not speaking for everyone. seems to me that that is logical, and not a 'weird take'.machinesworking wrote: Wed Oct 04, 2023 3:51 am The conversation was about whether updating the OS could cause issues. right, but i'm suggesting that your singular experience is just that. so again, i stand by my comments.machinesworking wrote: Wed Oct 04, 2023 4:48 pmThere's no need to say that OS or application bugs are a "singular experience", it's invalidating, and frankly it's obvious that all bugs do not affect all people.fisherKing wrote: Wed Oct 04, 2023 11:28 ami hear the rest of what you're saying, but stand by my comment about one's 'singular experience' not speaking for everyone. seems to me that that is logical, and not a 'weird take'.machinesworking wrote: Wed Oct 04, 2023 3:51 am The conversation was about whether updating the OS could cause issues. Please do benchmarks before update and after.

good idea, i guess i could benchmark some stuff. How would one do it scientifically? Just render files and time it?
CPU meters are so deceptive.
i'm tempted to upgrade, but i've only just gone from Monterey to Ventura and it's actually really good. For the first time EVER, i can add effects and instruments in Cubase and the sound stream is undisturbed. Mind blower.
