How are you working remotely?

I've tried a few times recently to work with people over t'internet and had nothing but problems...

Skype filters out them playing guitar so I can't hear what they're playing.

Cubase won't share an audio driver so I have to use a generic audio driver which stutters and crackles.

Zoom mutes your mic when you're playing something....

What a nightmare... I'm sure some of you clever bods have worked it out

Maybe I’m wrong, but it could be that everybody sees the thread title in the Everything Else subforum and thinks the thread is about literally working from home at your day job? That’s what I thought at first and was thinking to myself, who the hell wants to talk about that on a music forum? Maybe change the title to say “Collaborating Online”, rather than “Working Remotely” and also ask for it to be moved to the Production subforum?

Zoom mutes your mic when you're playing something....

A 2 second Google search tells you the exact Zoom settings to enable/disable to fix this.

It’s the 3rd ”People also ask” link when you Google the exact phrase said above lol:

Sure I could not be a d!ck but, idk, this is just my button (asking questions that imo should be very easily answered with the bare minimum effort), so I just usually opt to not comment.

I’m opting to say this now 1) because op is self-replying asking why there’s nothing but crickets chirping, and 2) for the very small hope someone else will read this, take it to heart, and at least Google before posting.

I didn't find a reason/answer to why zoom mutes the mic when you're sharing computer audio. But thanks to your link I was able to.... oh that's right you didn't post a link you just took the opportunity to make a LMGTFY post without actually doing it.

After a frustrating attempt to try and work remotely with someone I thought surely there's got to be a better way to do this... Maybe there's some platform/service I'm unaware of that everyone's using, so I thought I'd post here... on the music forum I joined 19 years ago.

There used to be some helpful people on here with a sense of community and willingness to help.

I guess some people just take the opportunity to vent rather than help.

Regardless, the reason for making this post was to ask if there was an alternative/better option than zoom or skype? These platforms don't seem optimised for audio users.

google drive, or maybe even github. or just email. share project files and audio (usually flac)

have used discord voice/video chat (combined with routing software like voice meeter) but that's more for discussing and show/tell, rather than trying to actually play live in sync with one another. we mostly used discord as a group chat type of thing, and it's dead simple to share video/audio clips or do a daw screencast.

have also used ninjam (via reaper) for improv jams. it's pseudo-realtime... offset by one bar. so you're playing to what they played last bar, and they're playing to what you played last bar, etc. not ideal, but can be fun just for jamming together and playing around.

I had a phone conversation with my former musical partner-in-crime in Q1 2021 where he wanted to try and do <remotely> what we used to do every day back in the day, ie., improvise live only over the internet. It sure looked like the first necessity was absolute, you have to have a proper landline phone and set up specific equipment* (which uses a version of Jack developed at U of Stanford. If I found this info anyone can, and I don't remember specifics beyond this.). Latency otherwise = impossible.
This neither of us could do, I was living in hotels and he was rooming in someone else's house. (*: Essentially a type of sound card. I don't know about video.)

There is ample evidence at Youtube of it having been done during the Covid19 shutdown, probably where SB got the notion from.
