Malcolm Gladwell "Blink"

Our subconscious makes a decision in the first moment, we then must overcome the subconscious to make informed/educated decisions. Gladwell's point was about race but we're obviously discussing much more important matters here. ;)

Plus, only the most ornate rooms and glitzed up women will be visible. Not good for Mary Ann > Ginger people.

I agree to that!

By the way, thanks for the instant delivery of the serial :) It took less than minute from buying to unlock the demo 😀
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Reason 13, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

The Unison is mono, right?
Correct. You can't select Poly with Unison also selected. Also I don't think there's a way to spread the unison voices out from left to right, but I could be wrong.

EDIT: You can do that by selecting Advanced in the lower-right (Voice Settings) and pan the voices around the way you want.

Yes, but the effect seems not that great.

Seems the Arp Rate knob does not react to the mouse wheel.

I almost always think that about synth plugins with visible keyboard displays. There should always be an option for a 'compact mode' where the user can disable the keyboard to make space for either other/additional on screen controls, or simply save on the extra screen space occupied by said keyboard.

Too much argumentative drama here on KVR. I mean, sure, it's always been a thing. We've all locked horns with somebody over something here. But I think it's gotten a little out of control lately. One of my favorite threads was just locked down because some people have nothing better to do than sling mud. We all need to chill and remember that this forum is what we make it. This isn't a response to any one person here. It's just something that's been on my mind as I scroll through the vitriol. I'm not a mod or anything so it's not my place to be the KVR police or whatever...but...yeah. Can we just not?

Yeah I never like the keyboard on a plug

I can choose a house, a car and a new girlfriend under 6 hours!!

Unless you’re a pure preset jockey, presets are not a great way of demoing any instrument, imo. I’m partial to a series of exercises that push the filter at different resonance levels at different mixer settings (NA in this case). Oscillator sync is another way to weed out weak points. Make sure things all sound right all the way up the keyboard.

Then look at the modulation. Is it robust? Easy to understand? Any interesting features?

Finally, put it up against something similar that you might own. Is it different enough?

That should give you a good sense of what to expect. It shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours in a simple instrument like OB-X.

But the preset thing… that’s a head scratcher. I have no idea why you’d want to limit your potential customers from hearing all of them. Not everyone makes their own sounds.

My criteria is a lot different.

Does the sounds it come with inspire me? Make me want to play or write...
Does the ui/ux appeal to me or annoy me? Do they have a lot of limitations or not to fit into my work flow...
How stable is it on my system?
How good is the cpu usage on my system.
Is the price worth it?

Those are my main ones and in that order.

But yeah I am not sure it is not hurting sales by limiting how much factory presets in a demo. I suspect it is to limit one using the demo in actual projects by bouncing and getting around the demo limitations to use in actual productions.

Exactly!

It's a synth that doesn't depend on samples, so if some of the presets inspire me and I like enough from different kind of presets, then it's a candidate for buying. However complex the presets sound, I'm sure it is possible to come with similar results, because as I said it's not samples based synth.

Then I check how the cpu, stability, workflow and how good is guessing with the synth. This is mostly one task, so for me, for example, checking the sound and presets first. The better the synth and the more I like, the shorter the time to decide. In the OB-X case, it took me about 10 mins to 15 mins to decide. While I was listening, I already was checking the CPU and stability in my main DAW (Bitwig). So, for about 10 mins I was guessing and trying to know what each section is. I've already watched the demo while downloading it and I already have other GForce synths (Minimonsta, SEM and Oddity). That made it even easier to guess. So all decision making took about 20 mins from the first run. Of course I last checked the price which was discounted, with few searches, I found it little cheaper on JRR Shop, then done!

If I take it slowly, then it's about two days, half an hour each day with some reading for the manual. So, still, say, about 1 hour and half!

Doing my own presets is not a good indication of the synth quality, because I haven't mastered all the ins and outs of the synth, so how I could know what quality is there!

I don't care a lot about things like wooden margins or keyboard view, ... but I care a lot about fonts illegibleity and clear resizing.

So, it was easy for me to decide as I'm not a perfectionist.

Just get a bit of gaffa tape and put it over the keyboard on your screen...

That way you won't notice it 🌞
