RE201 or RE301, that was not the point : that plugin is just a rough emulation of a tape delay, without any accuracy regarding what makes its overall character :
- The spring reverb doesn't sound like a Roland Space Echo reverb at all :borg:
- The plugin doesn't self-oscillate; :o :?
- It doesn't seem to feature any kind of companding;
- There is no way to tweak either the tape age or the head azimuth... Which, when you know tape delays a bit, can make a huge difference in sound (and which is featured for instance on the AudioThing OuterSpace)...
- ... and despite not being faithful to the original sound and behavior, it doesn't feature modern things like tempo-synced delays or head panning.

To me, it looks like a plugin made by an enthusiast who borrowed a Space Echo for the week-end (which is fine and can please many users), but not really a contender for "the best emulation".
(The Cherry Audio gave me the very same impression)
If I want just an approximation of a vintage echo on a synth pad or a guitar chord lost in the mix, it does the job just fine (but well, D16 Repeater does this fine too). But if I want to play the Space Echo like an instrument (which imho "best emulation" is about), I may need better modelling, more accuracy, more features... Which Audiothing or Surreal Machine both provide.

My 0.2$, like we used to say

Mostly the Arturia if Im in the box, but sometimes Valhalla's sounds better, sometimes SoundToys does.. Just got the Galaxy this morning so haven't had a chance to compare.

Usually I just bust out the RE-20 and run a line out into it..

Gotta agree with an earlier post though. Where's the damn Roland SDE lineup at? My SDE1000 'died' a couple years ago and I really miss it. I'd take an SRV330 or 2000 too..

Right now I’m using the Arturia Delay TAPE 201. It is a noticeable improvement over the IK Space Delay.

Audiothing and/or GSi may be a little better than Arturia's, but probably not so much that it would make a difference in a mix.
I have both these too.

There is a huge difference in how their spring delay sounds. Too big for it to be a coding thing. I'm pretty confident that the two different units they modelled were from two different times with two different sets of specifications.

This kind of thing happened alot back then as developers try to improve on their design over the years. I'd hazard a guess is based on an earlier unit as it sounds quite dark, almost akin to the reverb tanks that was built in to their amps. Which is basically the origin of the Space Delay. The Arturia model seems like it was based on a later revised version where they modified the design to make it sit better in the mix.

Both are great in my mind. It's advantageous to have a darker model to use on brighter sources or a brighter model to use on darker sources to help balance the tone.
