My little ambient contribution for this month.

A nice free synth for those who starting experimenting with wavetables and modulation. However, some of the modulation sources seems to be not syncing with the DAW correctly (particularly the trance gate).

Loving this track. Still I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I think Spread light is not within the osc rules as non free plugins...

Are external comb filters, lo-fi plugins, decimator/bit crushers allowed these days in OSC?

There are also several other filters on the list so was wondering if using external filters is encouraged now. It would make rounds where the synth's internal filters are bad, much easier if external filters could be used for subtractive synthesis.

Also which effect is being used from the FIN-MICRO plugin, it seems like a very nifty plugin, I should give it a spin.

I asked myself the same, I think that spicing too much the synth of the month using external resonant filters and distortions fxs hinders the idea of the "one synth challenge".

The rules don't explicitly say they aren't allowed, but the rules do say not to use anything that overly transforms the sound, including going outside the bounds of effects that you can already use. As a specific quoted example: this is why you can use distortion or saturation for "non-destructive" warmth; but obviously, going too far will result in a "distorted" sound, unrecognizable from the original.



Principally, the idea is not to use effects that would leave the sound to be unrecognizable, which is why/how one could get away with filters if the identity of the sound is still present. Regardless, in-excessive use of all the plugins you mentioned was the case here:

>Cymatics Origin: a little bit of saturation and LP filter (no noise, movement, or chorus)

>FIN-MICRO: I'm using the "Cab & Room" effect, which is the one mode I use the most for OSC

>kHs Comb Filter: for the hats, I'm using this in a very small amount to emulate the resonances of an actual hihat. Quicker than using an EQ with a bunch of small peaks, while also not so much/hard that it begins to feed back (a popular sound design technique that doesn't apply here).

>PCM2612: a decimator (and therefore: a type of distortion) that would completely transform the sound if gone above low settings, but which I'm using within justified accordance of the rules ("Never go full 11" - in this case, a 3/32).

>Telofi X: I still joke about how this name is sort-of a misnomer, since all it is is a bandpass with width and output control, haha (edit: the song and original post has Telofi X removed, for being locked behind a paywall)

So ultimately, regarding your question of whether they're allowed: I've been "getting away with it" for the past few months, because of the initial principle that the sound must still be recognizable. Therefore, besides the other forbidden effects (chorus, flanger, etc), one wouldn't use a "full" comb filter or a "full" bitcrush, or even a filter which removes most of the sound.

By the rules' own logic, I'd love to be able to use a subtle chorus, but I won't unless that ever changes.

Finally: FIN-MICRO is super neat and I recommend it to everybody, but a lot of effects can't be used in OSC. For example: its default mode, "Infinity," uses a shimmer reverb (external pitch shifting is against the rules).
