Is Serum worth cashing out for, when you get Vital for free?

Using both is the best. There are things Serum doesn't do as well- like not being able to snap LFO nodes to grid- and there are things Vital doesn't do as well- wavetable editing, inability to modulate LFO nodes- for example.
That said, I feel more confident that Serum will persist and less so about Vital so I have recently started using the former more than the latter.

Serum has a status of cult classic. Vital can compete feature-wise. That wavetable editor is IMO amazing for example. But ... Serum gained the "of course you need Serum" kind of status, that is purely nostalgic and really tough to break. And honestly ... for a good reason. We all got used to it so much it's de-facto the way we think about synthesis now.

Serum has become something like the "standard". Which is probably because it's used by many big names, especially in EDM (David Guetta, Deadmau, etc.).
I don't know Vital but from the videos the synth seems to have a similar functionality as Serum. I think if you can't get a good sound with the free version of Vital, you won't with Serum.
But... if you have less experience with synth programming, it might be better to go for a synth that has a wider usage and where there are also many tutorials (this might be more the case with Serum).

If you worked with Serum and Vital, if you REALLY worked with both in a deeper way, you are going to find that the quality of Serum sounds is inevitably better, pristine…
I’am not talking about A/B test because that’s is too limited to the tester trying to generate the same sound. The overall structure of the sound including the FX and filters are a world apart.
But this is not to be believed or understood of even perceived by the majority of users going through presets alone (even though if your setup is above average, that too is enough to feel it).
I own both, of course.
But, who care right? We hear what we want to hear…. There you go, we are all right and wrong… and that’s good for Vital

The Sound Author made some phenomenal presets for Vital called, IIRC, Electra 1 and 2.
And The Unfinished did for Serum… great stuff.
