Welcome to the the One Synth Challenge:
It's a friendly music competition where you can win cool prizes but most importantly, meet amazing musicians, and learn a lot about mixing, sound design, and more! :)

Special Rules Used This Month:
  1. Percussion: For additional percussion sounds you may use the free VSC02 Percussion - see below.
  2. Commercial Fx Plugins: may be used (Subject to usual limitations regarding Fx use).
  3. Free Effects: For this month only the rules on free Fx type are relaxed i.e. modulations, distortions, granular etc. may all be used (and can go full 11!) as long as the source sound is from the Synful Orchestra and/or VSC02 Percussion - no external sound generators or audiorate modulations. These must be freeware and be freely available at the start of the competition, no betas, demos, magware or freeware that has expired. You should also give a full description of your use of these fx with your submission.
  4. Prizes: The single instance prize is not available this month.

This Month's Synth(s):
Chamber Orchestra 2 was "...designed from the beginning to be a library created and centered not around Hollywood – or even the traditional orchestra – but a celebration of the diversity of musical instruments and the people who play them; students, teachers, musicologists, and collectors- performing on everything from modern professional instruments to rare antiques."

Robert Kral on Synful: "Warner Bros. just handed me an assignment where I needed to replace a classical score on a new cartoon: Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Holst’s Planets, Handel’s Watermusic and Bach’s Air on G. I walked out of that meeting (knowing there is not the budget for an orchestra) thinking one thing : I MUST GET SYNFUL!!!."

To clarify, free effects can be turned up to 11, and commercial effects are allowed but must otherwise conform to the usual rules?

Is only that VSCO2 Percussion plugin allowed, or could one use the percussion from the SFZ or raw samples version of VSCO2 CE? I suppose that would require a list of which instruments are actually included in VSCO2 Percussion, and might introduce different modulation possibilities.
Celebrating 50 years of pants with frogs in them

It's going to be interesting!

But I have a question, what about build-in DAW effects? Can we use even distortion & modulation there? Or is that exception only for free external effects?

Correct!

To keep it simple I think it best people stick with the VSC02 Percussion plugin, though we are aware that the same samples are available in other formats.

Very good question! For various reasons the exception will only apply to free external effects. DAW fx are subject to the usual OSC limitations.

The VSCO2 Percussion require Kontakt?

Vsco2 percussion is a vst ... works in your DAW.

Has anyone got a drum map for this instrument ...

e.g for a GM kit
35 B0 Acoustic Bass Drum
36 C1 Bass Drum 1
37 C#1 Side Stick
38 D1 Acoustic Snare
39 D#1 Hand Clap
40 E 1Electric Snare
41 F1 Low Floor Tom
42 F#1 Closed Hi-Hat
43 G1 High Floor Tom
44 G#1 Pedal Hi-Hat
45 A1 Low Tom
etc...

As mentioned by myself in the Discord, here's a nutshelled version of the special rules:

>Free third-party effects: go crazy and break the rules! 😁
>Paid third party effects: ALLOWED, but follow the normal rules
>Stock DAW effects: follow the normal rules
>ALL effects: no audiorate modulation or anything that generates its own tone or noise

It took me a couple tries but I figured it out.

Once last dumb question - the pic in the first post shows the VSCO plugin with the flute - I assume we cannot use any of the other Vermillion sample instruments?

Do the Audio Damage plug-ins (especially Rough Rider 3) count as expired freeware? Or are they allowed?
What about Ohm Force effects?

May the special capabilities of Bitwig be used? Its stock delay plug-in can place effects in its feedback loop Is it okay to make use of that feature? (I'm dreaming of freeware granulators and distortion effects in the feedback loop of DAW-builtin delay effects)

I am somebody who regularly uses legacy Audio Damage and Toneboosters effects: as long as they are available for download at no cost, we can use them, since they were paid plugins that became free.

A special exception is Freakshow Industries' plugins, which can be "stolen" on their own site, but it is expected that you pay.

Anyway: thanks for the reminder about Ohmicide!

My understanding is that this month DAW included effects are to be treated the same as commercial plugins...
