I can't remember a year when plugin releases where less exciting than in 2023.
I suppose the plugin market is oversaturated!?
Or did I miss anything?

PSP - Saturator, is the best Oversaturator in 2023.

There's a ton of stuff available, more than anyone can ever make decent use of. One could have stopped acquiring new plugins 15 years ago and still be set for life. But people still complain on forums that the flow of new Pokemon to catch isn't as fast as they like, that there isn't enough innovation, that updates aren't fast enough, blah blah blah.

I like getting new stuff too. I don't actually care which of these were new releases, but so far this year I've bought Lancinantes, Retronaut, Deadalus Delay, Cascade, Wavesfactory Equalizer, UFX Reverb, Synclavier V, Saturn 2, Harmonia, Entonal Studio, Lines, and Seqund.

There are still two months left, and Sumu is imminent.

I'm not that much of an optimist honestly, but I get tired of the constant "there isn't anything new!" on various music forums, when (A) there is and (B) we don't really need anything new anyway, we're just accustomed to a constant flow of new stuff.

I noticed that I haven´t spent serious money on plugins and sample libraries in 2023 because there hasn´t been a lot of tempting releases - despite the ever increasing quality of synth and effects plugins and sample libraries. So what´s the issue? Market saturation imho.

1) The high level of quality and big choice make it hard to become excited about *yet another excellent plugin*. There´s just a ton of great plugins on the market, and less and less duds - the good stuff is still coming, it just doesn´t stand out anymore.

Just look at the thread for the Minimal Current synth (skip the subscription discussion). 5 years ago, people would have gone absolutely crazy about that synth. And now? "Meh, not bad but I´ve already got Serum and Phase Plant and Falcon and Avenger and Vital and Rapid... etcetc".

2) How many really *new* and musically usable concepts are there anyway? Surprise me, but a lot of plugins are necessarily minor variations on stuff I already have. I´ve got some 20+ (paid) saturation and distortion plugins and regularly use 4 of them. The rest just does basically the same as these 4.

In fact, I uninstalled some 3/4 of my plugins earlier this year and got a real productivity kick out of that. I don´t feel I lost any sonic range, in fact it got broader because I´m rather learning to get the best out of fewer plugins instead of scratching more surfaces.

3) Then there´s the trend towards tools that, in theory, might enable one to make incredible sounds but which would need full time dedication -or more- to get the best out of them <coughFalcon>. These are coming too, but flying straight over my head. Far, far over my head.

Example: 100+GB orchestral libraries with dozens of articulations per instrument etc. Great for professional soundtrack work where assistants often do the dirty footwork, not for some minor part time electro musician who "just needs a pizzicato".

Same with me (as best I can recall), except for this lovely granular thingy (currently $29.00):

I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil
